Alice L. Sladek Anderson Salen, 94, of Rapid City, passed away Sunday, April 17, 2016 at West Hills Village Health Care.
Alice was born on the family farm in Pukwana, SD to John and Blanche (Colt) Sladek on December 2, 1921. As a youngster, she grew up in Chamberlain, survived the typhoid epidemic during the Great Depression and graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1938. She went on to the University of South Dakota where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority while earning a degree in Business Administration. During WWII, Alice was trained by Midcontinent Airlines as an airline hostess. She left that position to marry her college sweetheart, Captain Burton Anderson on April 3, 1945, one day after he returned home from World War II as a decorated war hero.
Alice and Burt spent nearly all of their married life promoting the business community of Chamberlain, SD, where they raised their four children. Alice was an active member of P.E.O. and the United Church of Christ. She was well known for her exciting golf and bridge tournaments where she won several championships in Chamberlain and at their winter home, in Mesa, AZ.
After Burt's death in 1988, Alice continued to spend winters in Arizona, where she met Robert Salen. She and Bob were married on November 1, 1991 in Mesa, where they lived until they moved to Rapid City in 2005. Robert shared Alice's passion for golf, bridge, friendships and life for the past twenty five years of their marriage.
Alice is survived by her husband, Robert; her daughters, Nancy (Jim) Hawke, Rapid City, Marsha (Craig) Thompson, Vermillion, SD, her sons, Craig (Michelle) Anderson and Brett (Stephanie Klasi) Anderson, Minneapolis, MN. Her grandchildren; Jen (Jon) Looby, Jordan (Casey) Thompson, Ashley (Jerad) Hesla, Ryan Anderson, Samantha Boll, Merrick, Ella and Clara Anderson, her great grandchildren, Nicholas and Rachel Looby, Stella and James Thompson, and Guy and Willa Hesla. She is also survived by Bob's children; Jeff, Katie, Jenny and their families.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, siblings and first husband, Burton; daughter Roxanne, grandson, Eric Anderson and great grandson, Austin Looby.
A memorial has been established to the West Hills Village Heal care Foundation.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the West Hills Village Theatre with Pastor Sharla McCaskell officiating.
Inurnment of her ashes will take place at Riverview Cemetery in Chamberlain at a future date.
