Obituary

HILL CITY- Alice R. Gregson, 90, died Monday, September 3, 2012 at Hill City, South Dakota. Alice Rose Gregson was born September 9, 1921, to Golden Spink Waterbury Howe and Oscar Fredrick Howe in Yankton, SD. Shortly after her birth her parents moved to Tabor, South Dakota, and from there to Rapid City, SD where Alice's only sibling Richard Andrew Howe was born on January 30, 1927. Here elementary years during the Great Depression were spent at Lincoln and Washington school. Her father had work during these trying years for the CCC which relocated their family to Nemo, SD. This new school was a welcome change because of the girls basketball and track teams which Alice participated in until her Sophomore year. New employment at the Hill City Helitack base moved the family to a home across the highway from the facility. Alice graduated from Hill City High School in 1940 and Black Hills School of Business in 1942. In contrast to the conflict of World War II love and marriage entered Alice's life as she married Buford Gregson on June 9, 1942. They, along with, brother in law Dale Gregson and his wife Myrtle ventured to Elcerita, CA to assist in the war effort in the naval shipyards of that area. Alice and Buford's lifelong love of the Black Hills instigated a prompt return from their travels to the coast. Residing in a one room building with a handdug well, outhouse, and wood stove on the Gregson Ranch their first son, Tim Lewis Gregson, was born on March 4, 1943. The home grew modestly over the years as well as the family with the birth of David Lewis Gregson on July 6, 1950. The quaint structure would be her home for 80 years until her passing in her sleep on September 3, 2012 at nearly 91 years of age. Alice spent her life passionate about God, family, dancing, and her career. The lord was present every day and in everything Alice did and she felt that God had truly blessed her and her family over the years evident by the birth of her grandchildren, Luke Lewis Gregson July 26, 1977 and Boe Lewis Gregson November 7, 1979 Her devotion to her family took on many roles and responsibilities none less than surviving the passing of her father Oscar 1964, husband Buford 1979, brother Richard 1983, grandson Luke 1994, and mother Goldie 1995. Alice was known for her impeccable attire which she enjoyed displaying on the dance floor. A high school dance partner returned to her life in 1995, Frank (Bud) Hall. Bud was a blessing and helped soften the loss of family and lift her spirits with dance until his death in 2000. Alice was very proud of her work which initially had many roles as cowgirl, architect assistant, gold mine guide, Hill City Zoo receptionist, Lithium Mine secretary, and finally secretary to the Superintendent of Mount Rushmore. She retired from this position after 30 years in 1990 and was awarded two Special Achievement Awards and a Merit Award for above work performance. Retirement did not slow her down in that she assisted her sons with tree marking , firewood projects and horse care in her beloved Black Hills up to her 90 birthday. Alice is survived by her sons Tim and David, grandson Boe with wife Angela, Elaine Ackles, the Hall Family, and her many animals. A memorial has been established in Alice Rose Gregson's name to benefit the Pennington County Dog and Cat Shelter. Memorial Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 15, 2012 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City.
