Obituary

Alice McDonald, one hundred pounds of extreme toughness and extreme generosity-wrapped in a beautiful little package with the voice of a "garden bird!" Picture a 91 year old mowing a one acre lot in July and in February hanging clothes on the line in the snow with her over-boots on! Alice passed away on March 1, 2015, in Texas while in the loving, diligent care of her granddaughter, Colleen Williams. Alice was born to Ralph and Kate Merrill in 1921 in Rapid City and was brought up on their ranch on the present day site of St. Martins Academy. Alice graduated from Rapid City High School in 1939. She met and married Maurice McDonald in 1942. They built their house themselves, 770 square feet, next to Wilderness Park, where Alice resided until 2012. The McDonalds were blessed with one smart, beautiful daughter, Linda Cogan, who had all of Alice's positive traits and passed in 2009 after a battle with MS. Alice worked for roughly 50 years at F & M Bootery, a job she loved. Always very generous to her family and grandchildren, Alice and Mac were very disciplined money managers--NEVER making a house payment or car payment. Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Mac, her daughter, Linda Cogan, sisters, Viola Misle and Gladys Luft and parents, Ralph and Kate Merrill. She is survived by her granddaughter, Colleen Williams, great granddaughters, Sydney Williams and Chloe Williams of Iowa State University and son-in-law, Doug Cogan. A sincere and indebted thanks to the Devine Mercy Hospice, Saginaw, Texas and her beautiful granddaughter, Colleen and great granddaughter, Sydney Williams, who gave her such selfless, loving care 24/7 in their Texas home for the last year and a half of her life. Visitation will be Friday, March 6, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. A Christian funeral mass will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, at Blessed Sacrament Church. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the MS Society would be appreciated!
