Obituary

RAPID CITY- Alice Rebbeck, 101, died Thursday, August 25, 2016 at her home in Rapid City.

Alice Frances Rebbeck was born Wo Hau Chow in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, on June 5, 1915. Her mother died shortly after her birth, and she was sent by her father to live at the Kim Sing How Wong Miu Temple. She was raised by Shin Sing Chow and Lim Choy Chow, the Temple's priest and priestess. She was educated at the Royal School in Honolulu and graduated from McKinley High School in 1933.

In her 101 years on earth, Alice experienced incredible events and changes. In the year of her birth, the last Queen of Hawaii was still living, World War I had just broken out, Woodrow Wilson was president, the first long distance telephone call was made, and construction on the Lincoln Memorial started. She was 12 years old when the first airplane flight was made to Hawaii. She graduated from high school the year prohibition was repealed.

On December 7, 1941, she was living in Waikiki and witnessed Japanese bombers flying over the beach on their way to bomb Pearl Harbor. She saw the smoke from the attack in the distance. Shortly thereafter, she joined the Women's Army Corps and rose to the rank of Sargent, earning numerous medals for her active duty service during World War II.

In 1957, she met Richard Williams Rebbeck of Colorado at the First Methodist Church in Honolulu. Because they were of different races, they were not allowed to marry in a number of states, but finally tied the knot in 1959 in Pueblo, Colorado. In 1959, Richard and Alice moved to Rapid City, and raised two children, Risa and Tim.

Alice was not able initially to complete her college education, which started in Hawaii in the 1930's. More than 50 years later, in 1988 at age 73, she earned her Bachelor's Degree from Black Hills State College after driving nearly every day for four years between Rapid City and Spearfish to take classes. She was engaged in many activities including Habitat for Humanity, the American Association of University Women, and Youth for Understanding, but above all she valued her many friends and her church family.

Alice Rebbeck was a force of nature, and filled all the space that she was allotted in life. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth Wah Kin Chow and Edward Kui Shin Chow. Her legacy continues through her daughter Risa Centenni, son-in-law Joe Centenni, and granddaughter Kira Centenni of Long Beach, NY; Son Timothy Rebbeck, daughter-in-law Jill Rebbeck, and granddaughter Sophie Rebbeck of Boston, MA, and granddaughter Alanna Rebbeck of Annandale-on-Hudson, NY.

Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Friday, September 2, 2016 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.

A celebration of Alice's life will be held on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 1:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church in Rapid City.  There will be a brief reception at the church immediately following the service.

Burial will take place at Mt. View Cemetery in Rapid City.
