Obituary

Alice Joline Sullivan, 89, passed away at her Rapid City home on Monday, January 27, 2025. She was born to Joseph and Gertrude Oberle on February 25, 1935, in Dodge City, Kansas. She was the middle child, between brothers Eugene and William.

She married her high-school sweetheart, Gerald (Jerry) Sullivan, on June 2, 1953. A few years later, they moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, after a vacation to the Black Hills. They and their children, Darrell, Bret, Dawnette, and Bradley adored their yellow split-level home and their Cruz Drive neighborhood.

Alice was a stay-at-home mom when they lived in Rapid City. She kept the cleanest house on the block and baked an endless supply of cookies and cakes.

In 1978 Alice, Jerry, and Brad moved back to Kansas, to help her mother adjust to the move from the family farm to nearby Dodge City. When Alice rejoined the workforce, her employers benefitted from her strong work ethics and her impressive typing skills. In 1997, the couple moved back to the Black Hills, first building a home in Hill City before settling back in Rapid City.

She never drew attention to herself and would scoff at the notion that she was an accomplished seamstress, even though she created her beautiful wedding dress. Alice was also a talented pianist. She loved to walk and could be seen cleaning up the environment on her walks around Hill City and Sheridan Lake Road. A few years ago, she moved her daily walks indoors.

Alice put her family ahead of herself, but still found time to enjoy Lawrence Welk, The Andy Griffith Show, The Sound of Music, church gatherings, family vacations, sweets, friendships with neighbors, family games, and her beloved cats.

She was preceded in death by their infant daughter, Shawna; her parents; brother, Eugene; and several siblings-in-law and extended family members. Alice is now a member of The Sullivan Card Game in Heaven.

She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Jerry; children Darrell (Nancy), Hill City, SD; Bret (Becky), Rapid City, SD; Dawnette (Rollie) Owens, Hill City, SD; and Brad (Maria), Round Rock, TX. She is also survived by brother, Bill (Mary); sisters-in-law Marquerite, Verena, and Peg; brothers-in-law Glenn, Don, and Jim; grandchildren Sarah, Casey, Paul, and Ethan; step-grandson, Nick; great grandchildren Brooklyn and Ryleigh, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends and family are invited to her visitation at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 31, 2025, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. The Vigil Service will begin at 6:00 p.m., followed by the Rosary. A Christian Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 1 at Blessed Sacrament Church.  Burial will be at a later date at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Alice's memory to Blessed Sacrament Church for animal rescue support.
