Obituary

Alice E. Udager Barnhart, 101, St. Maries, ID, died Friday, October 10, at St. Maries Hospital. Alice Elvira Hansen was born Dec. 13, 1906 to Hans O. and Abigail (Shaff) Hansen in Crookston, MN. She went, with her parents, first to Alta, Iowa then to western South Dakota where her father homesteaded west of Faith. She remembers, at age 4, going part way on the train to Mobridge then her father came to get them with a team and hay wagon for the rest of the trip to Meade County. She attended the Edson country school and graduated from 8th grade there. Alice loved to dance and as a young lady, would attend the local Saturday night dances with her family. Her father and two brothers all played music for these dances. On July 27, 1923, she married Ole Udager, a native of Norway. They lived on a ranch, which Ole homesteaded when he came to America. To them were born 6 children, Helen Lavonne, Helge Oscar, Diane Volberg, John Thomas, Carl Martin and Melvin Ole. They raised both cattle and sheep on their ranch and Alice raised large gardens and canned all their food. In 1953 they left the ranch and moved into Faith where Alice belonged to the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the American Legion Auxiliary. She worked at the Faith hospital for many years. They loved to travel and made two trips back to Norway to visit Oles family and also traveled all over the western USA. Ole passed away April 10, 1971 in Faith. Alice continued to travel to visit her siblings in CA and ID. In 1974 she moved to St. Maries, ID where her brother, Harvey Stub Hansen lived. She bought a home there and was a member of Senior Citizen, Eagles Aux. drill team, VFW Ladies Aux, and St. Pauls Lutheran Church. Alice liked to go snowcating and even got her own Snow Cat. She also loved to go for rides on her nephews motorcycle. In 1981 Alice married Glenn Barnhart. They lived in Spokane, WA for a while then moved back to St. Maries. They traveled to many places and she loved to go to California to see her sisters there. Glenn passed away Jan. 16, 1994. Alice loved to Crochet, was an avid reader and loved to garden and raise indoor and outdoor plants. She had an atrium with at least 50 plants of all kinds. She loved animals and fed every cat that came to her door. In 2006, her 100th birthday was celebrated with a large family reunion in St. Maries with about 125 attending. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Hans and Abigail Hansen, one son, Oscar, one daughter, Diane Keehner, twin grandsons, 5 brothers, Carl, Harvey Stub. Stanley, George Mike, and Warren, 6 sisters, Lillian Spawn, Evelyn Peters, Bertha Heidman, Marian Royer, Beatrice Hein and Irene McGinnis, 2 sons-in-law and 1 daughter-in-law and her husbands, Ole Udager and Glen Barnhart. Alice is survived by her sons, Tom Udager, Faith, Carl Udager, St. Maries, ID, Melvin (Beverly) Udager, St. Maries, ID, a daughter, Helen Samuelson, Cheyenne, WY, 15 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 16 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday, Oct. 16, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City. Funeral services will be 11:00 Friday, Oct. 17 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Faith, SD with Pastor Allen Mentor officiating. Burial will be in the Faith Cemetery.
