Alice Jane (Hammond) VanDerPol, 77, of Rapid City, SD, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital.

Alice was born on April 10, 1947, in Kansas City, Missouri, the eldest child of John Douglas and Mary Kathleen (Carples) Hammond. As a young
girl, her family moved to Rapid City, SD. She was raised in the same home where she later raised her family and remained living there until her death. She graduated in 1965 from St. Martin's Academy and in 1989from Black Hills Beauty College.

While "cruising" 8th Street in the summer of 1966, she met a young, handsome airman from Ellsworth Air Force Base who would soon become her husband. Alice married Arlan R. VanDerPol on February 15, 1967, in Rapid City, SD. Through this union, four children were born. As a couple, they enjoyed bowling, camping, gardening, and hunting for seashells on the beaches of Hawaii. Alice worked various jobs throughout her life, but her primary career was being a wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed her many pets over the years and seemed happiest with a bird chirping in the background and a puppy on her lap. She was so proud of having seen Elvis Presley perform live in concert, which turned out to be his final performance. When he died, a piece of her heart did too. Elvis Presley was truly her King!

Survivors include her children: Dawn VanDerPol, Shoun (Amy) VanDerPol, Sherrie (William) Huffmon, and Karla (Raymond) O'Connell, all of Rapid City, SD; grandchildren: Hannah, Tawna, Thomas, Leah, Joseph, Allison, Taylan, Bekk, Jordan, Kayla, Judian, and Christian; 18 great-grandchildren; her sister, Mary Afemui, Rapid City, SD; brothers, John (Kathy) Hammond Jr., Rapid City, SD, and Charles (Theresa) Hammond; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arlan, on October 22, 2020, and her parents, John Hammond Sr. and Mary Hammond.

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 14, 2025, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be held on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, Rapid City, SD. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
