RAPID CITY -- Alice E. Wolden Hanson Strand, 84, Rapid City, died Saturday, May 21, 2011, at Westhills Village Health Care Facility. Alice was born November 20, 1926 at Akron, Iowa, the youngest of 8 children to Anton & Johanna (Running) Wolden. The family moved to the Philip area in 1930. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended Philip schools. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Philip. She married L.S. Hanson in 1945. They owned and operated Hanson Implement and Hardware. She worked part time as book keeper and in sales. They built Philip Livestock Auction in 1950, where Alice operated the lunch room and did part time office work. In 1953 the family moved to Pierre and purchased Ft. Pierre Livestock Auction, where she clerked sales and worked in the office. In 1966 she began working at the Childrens & Teen Shop in downtown Pierre. In 1968 she began working at Lucas & Theim as a buyer and sales clerk. She was a member of Lutheran Memorial Church, president of the Mothers Club, taught Sunday school, Brownies and Scout troops and was active in PTA. In 1975 she moved to Rapid City and worked as a travel agent at Haggertys Travel for 20 years and became assistant manager. She was a member of the Lutheran Church, Hospital Auxiliary, Sons of Norway, and Canyon Lake Senior Center. She traveled extensively to many parts of the world having an excellent opportunity with the Travel Agency. In 1979 she married Neal Strand. He passed away in April 2000. Alice enjoyed golf, bridge, line dancing and dancing in general. The past few years were spent dancing and taking country drives with special friend Vernon Burns. She is survived by one son: Dennis Hanson of Ft Pierre, SD; three daughters, Lenny Kay Hanson, San Francisco, CA, Marilyn (Michael) Long, Rapid City, SD, Barbara (Doyle) Mellegard, Belfair, WA ; eleven grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; one brother Arnold Wolden, Philip, SD; and two sisters Julie Brooks, Sisseton, SD; and Helga Warrington, Aurora, CO. Preceded in death by husband, Neal; sons: D. Mark, David, & Bryan Hanson; her parents, two brothers: Sam & Oliver Wolden; and two sisters: Mae Keil and Agnes Fickbohm. To my Children I Love You, You are my Sunshine! Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 24, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with the Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery. Memorials have been established for Sons of Norway Lodge and Rapid City Club for Boys.
