Obituary

RAPID CITY- Alta June (Hamm) Thompson, born June 7th, 1928 to Ralph Dewey Hamm and Ruth Emma (Quick) in Rapid City, SD passed away on May 26th, 2014 in Billings, MT, where she had been living since 2009. Alta was born and raised in Rapid City, where she enjoyed dancing with her friends, hiking in the Black Hills and picnicing in the Stratosphere Bowl, among many other favorite places. She was named Gambles Queen in her late teens and was seen riding in the Gamble's float down Rapid City Main street. She met and dated the love of her life, Kenneth W. Thompson of Noonan, ND, and they were married on Dec. 7th, 1949. "And that was the day the war began!" he used to say with a smile on his face, and a twinkle in his eye. The couple made thier first home in Rapid City before moving to Boise, ID, back to South Dakota, to Montana, Colorado and Oklahoma and finally to Miles City, MT where Kenny worked as a carpenter until his death in 1982. Alta moved back to Rapid City in 1983 where she worked at the Reptile Gardens for the next 25 years, returning to MT in 2009, this time to Billings due to her failing health, leaving behind her beloved Black Hills once again. She lived her remaining 5 years of her life being looked after by her daughters also living in Billings. She died peacefully with her children next to her, and will be lovingly remembered by countless family and friends in all of the places she lived and worked. She was preceeded in death by both parents, 3 brothers, Lyle, Kenneth and Carol, her husband of 33 years, daughter Tana Marie Goff, son Billy K, a grandson, a granddaughter, and a great grandson. She is survived by sisters Maralee (& Arnett) Dennis of Rapid City and Jeannette (& Bob) Yahne of Three Rivers, CA, daughters Terri Lee Haacke, Roxi Lynn Mill and Te (Marla) Raye Way all of Billings, MT, daughter Lori (& Steve) Watts of Stanwood, WA, son Jerry (& Leah) Thompson of Round Rock, TX, 15 grand children, 30 great grand children and 1 great great grandchild." Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 30, 2014 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Visitation will be for one hour prior to services. Interment will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
