RAPID CITY-Anthony J "Tony" Quinn passed away at the Custer Regional Senior Care on Sunday, December 30, 2012. Anthony was always proud to say that he was from Hudson Flat - 45 miles NE of Philip. He was born December 4, 1929 to Peter & Charlotte (Phalen) Quinn. He was the youngest of five children -- Jack, Margaret, Elizabeth, and Leo. In 1952, he enlisted in the Army and took Basic Training in Kentucky. After that, he was stationed in France, but due to medical issues he was medically discharged and came home to South Dakota in 1953. In 1954, he moved to Rapid City and spent the next 40 years working for Hackett Construction, which is now Gustafson Builders. He started out as an apprentice and worked his way up (with the help & education from some great guys) to become a superintendent. He retired in 1995. Some of his greatest jobs were the Catholic Church in Fort Pierre, the Federal Building in Rapid City, the remodel of the Evans Hotel into low income apartments for the elderly in Hot Springs, and the control tower at Ellsworth Air Force Base. On June 1, 1956, he married Esther Young, of Fairburn, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Rapid City. Anthony & Esther had 2 children -- James Anthony in 1963 and Anna Marie in 1968. Esther passed away in 1996; it was a great loss but he carried on whether it was having coffee with the guys at McDonalds, enjoying a meal at Millstone, or spending time at his brother Jack's farm on Hudson Flat. One thing he was very proud of was his part in the Knights of Columbus. A devout Catholic, he joined in 1948 when he was 18. He was the first Grand Knight of the St. Therese Council #8025 and was also awarded South Dakota Knight of Year in the spring of 1989. Whether it was his family, construction, or the Knights, he put his whole heart into it. He will be greatly missed but we all have one awesome guardian angel. He is survived by his son, Jim Quinn (and special friend Bonnie White Buffalo) of Rapid City; his daughter, Anna Marie (Joel) Harsma of Rapid City; his sister, Elizabeth Berry of St. Cloud, MN; his brother, Leo (Joyce) of Rapid City; his sister-in-law, Donna Quinn of Millesville, SD; 4 special cousins, Kevin, Eamon, Emmet, & Plunkett, of Northern Ireland and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Esther, his parents, his sister Margaret, his brother Jack and 2 nephews, Joe & Tom. Visitation will be from 5pm to 7pm with 7pm Christian wake services Thursday, January 3, 2013, at the Church of St. Therese, the Little Flower. Services will be at 10am Friday, January 4, at the church with the Rev. William Zandri officiating. Interment with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota Army Reserve National Guard will follow at the Fairburn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established to Alzheimer's Research.
