Obituary

RAPID CITY- Ardelle (Owens) Johnson, 84, passed away at home with her husband Oliver at her side. Ardelle was born in Newell, SD on November 10, 1929to Fred and Hilda Owens. As a child, she began playing the piano for church services at First Lutheran Church. She played for many funerals, weddings, and special events. In high school, she played several instruments and enjoyed marching band. On a May night in 1946 she noticed a tall handsome young man watching her from across a dance hall. One dance and she knew she had met the love of her life, Oliver Johnson. Ardelle and Oliver were married two years later on May 8, 1948. They enjoyed nearly 66 years together and raised two children: Gary and Eileen. Ardelle and Oliver were partners throughout their lives. As newlyweds, they farmed and ranched near Vale, SD and later east of Piedmont, SD. Ardelle continued to enjoy her piano, giving lessons to many neighborhood children and playing for her childrens' school and 4H programs. After farming for many years, Ardelle and Oliver owned and operated Johnson Motel in Rapid City. After "retiring" from the motel, Ardelle worked at Hardware Hank for several years. Ardelle's greatest love was her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was delighted to teach some of them to play the piano. Ardelle was always very active at Trinity Lutheran Church, especially in the ladies circles and Bible studies. She continued to play the piano for church services at Echo Ridge Senior Apartments, where she lived. Ardelle was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers (Everett, Teddy, and Gerald); one sister, Ruth; and her son, Gary. She is survived by her husband, Oliver; daughter, Eileen; six grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 16, 2014 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 17, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Trinity Lutheran Church radio ministry.
