IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ardis 'Ardie'
Arguello
December 23, 1938 – January 9, 2022
Ardis "Ardie" M. (Holcomb) Arguello, 83, of Rapid City, SD, passed away, peacefully, surrounded by family on Sunday, January 9, 2022.
Ardis was born December 23, 1938, in Belle Fourche, SD. She spent her early years on her family's ranch in Harding County, South Dakota, graduating from Belle Fourche High School in 1957. After high school, Ardis married Richard Houdek. She was committed to her family as a stay-at-home mom raising six children.
After she and Richard divorced, she returned to school at the age of 42, graduating from the School of Nursing, in Rapid City, SD. She began her career at Rapid City Regional Hospital in 1983, where she focused her interest in Obstetrics as a labor and delivery nurse. Throughout her career, Ardis assisted many mothers bringing babies into the world including many of her own grandchildren. In 1984, Ardis married Benito "Ben" Arguello, adding three more children to the mix whom she raised alongside her own. It was then that she realized she had a great love of fishing, camping and outdoor adventures.
Ardis retired in 2007, after a 24+ year career to fully pursue her love of fishing, boating and camping. Throughout their life together, she and Ben made annual trips up and down the Missouri River, catching walleye and making memories from Mobridge to Chamberlain and everywhere in between. Whether it was her and Ben alone or with any combination of kids, grand-kids or their many friends, her time fishing, camping and riding the Missouri were some of her favorite memories. If they weren't camping or spending time with family, they enjoyed an occasional evening at the Silverado in Deadwood or out dancing. Ardis and Ben loved to dance, and they were quite good at it, taking any opportunity to cut a rug.
Ardis was a woman solid in her faith, her family, and her love for life. Those who remember her would say she had an infectious sense of humor and was always ready with a laugh. Knowing her was to have heard some of her favorite sayings such as: "Oh, Buck up", "And that's that story", or "Needless to say".
Ardis is survived by the love of her life, Benito Arguello, her children Kem (Tami) Houdek, Kallie Hiland, Rett (Lori) Houdek, Stacie (Kelly) Baier, Sid (Teri) Houdek, Ryan (Christine) Houdek; step-children Rodney Arguello, Kelly (Brianne) Arguello, Jamie (Mareike) Arguello, and David (Judy) Longbaken, 23 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; sister-in law Alice Holcomb, niece Sandra (Larry) Nelson and nephew Zane Holcomb. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Anne Holcomb, and her brother Monte Holcomb.
In honoring Ardis' wishes and her commitment to medicine, her body will be donated to the University of South Dakota in furtherance of medical research and to advance knowledge for students in medicine.
A celebration of life reception will be held on January 22, 2022, at Hay Camp, 601 Kansas City St, Rapid City, SD 57701, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, honoring Ardis' deep dedication to helping others, the family has asked that a donation be made in her name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Cornerstone Rescue Mission or The Hope Center.
