Obituary

RAPID CITY- Arlan Roorda VanDerPol, 74, died peacefully at home on Thursday, October 22, 2020.

He was born on June 7, 1946 in Newton, Iowa to Harold & Henrietta (Franje) VanDerPol. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School in Iowa, class of 1964.

Arlan enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on November 20, 1964 and was honorably discharged on August 20, 1974 as a SSgt. During this time, Arlan was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base where he met his future wife, Alice Hammond. The two were married on February 15, 1967. Following the Air Force, Arlan worked for his father in law with H&R Plumbing. Arlan enlisted in the South Dakota Army National Guard on July 11, 1983 and was honorably discharged on February 28, 1997 as a E7. During his time with the Army National Guard, Arlan was a medic and supply Sgt. After retiring from the Army National Guard, he worked for the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with the ROTC program as a supply Sgt., delivered pizza for Domino's, and ended his career as a security guard with the Rushmore Mall.

He enjoyed bowling, camping, and gardening. He was an avid Dallas Cowboy's fan. Arlan coached softball and enjoyed skydiving.

Arlan will be remembered for being a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Henrietta VanDerPol.

He is survived by his wife, Alice, Rapid City; children: Dawn VanDerPol, Greeley, CO; Shoun (Amy) VanDerPol, Rapid City; Sherrie (Will) Huffmon, Rapid City; Karla (Raymond) O'Connell, Rapid City; 12 grandchildren: Hannah, Tawna, Thomas, Leah, Joseph, Allison, Taylan, Bekk, Kayla, Judian, Christian, Jordan; 10 great grandchildren; two brothers: John (Sharon) VanDerPol; Marvin (Frances) VanDerPol; numerous nieces, and nephews.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2020 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to services.

Interment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with full military honors rendered by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the Ellsworth Air Force Base Honor Guard.
