Arlene Erma Dieterle, a woman whose life was a tapestry woven with love, faith, and unwavering devotion to family, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 14, 2026, at Custer Hospital. Born on March 1, 1930, in Evanston, Wyoming, Arlene’s journey through life was marked by a quiet strength and a heart that embraced all who knew her.
Arlene was the beloved wife of the late Harry Dieterle, and together they nurtured a large and loving family. She was predeceased by her son James Dieterle, her parents, five sisters, three brothers, and a cherished granddaughter. These losses were a poignant part of her story, yet her spirit remained undiminished.
The proudest accomplishment of Arlene’s life was her family — a vibrant legacy consisting of seven children who carry forward her values and love. Her sons Fred (Chris) of Spokane, WA, and Larry (Debbie) of Apple Valley, MN; daughters Barbara (David) of Topsham, ME, Peggy of Hill City, SD, Pam (Garold) of Hill City, SD, and Carla (Scott) of Hill City, SD, are the living testament to her nurturing nature and boundless care. Beyond her children, Arlene leaves behind an extraordinary lineage of 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren who reflect the enduring light she shone into the world.
After dedicating many years to raising her children with kindness and wisdom, Arlene brought her warmth and dedication to Custer State Hospital, where she worked for ten years before retiring. Even in her career, she was the embodiment of quiet thoughtfulness and patient kindness.
Arlene found joy in the simple, heartfelt pleasures of life. She loved playing cards, a pastime shared often with those she held dear, finding laughter and companionship across the table. Watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play filled her with indescribable joy, a testament to the central role family played in her existence. She also embraced hobbies that connected her to community and tradition—canning, making jelly, line dancing, and generously serving at the Senior Center, where her spirit of service shone brightly.
Those who knew her remember Arlene as kind and welcoming, a woman whose love radiated quietly but profoundly. Her faith was unwavering, providing a serene foundation that carried her through all seasons of life. A blessed friendship of 73 years with Gini Pennel speaks of the deep bonds she cultivated—friendships that spanned decades and seasons, enduring with the steadfastness that defined Arlene herself.
As we reflect on Arlene Erma Dieterle’s life, we are reminded of a soul lived in gentle dedication, a beacon of love that illuminated the lives of all she encountered. Her presence was a sanctuary of kindness and thoughtfulness, her love a gift treasured and passed down through generations.
She moves now beyond the veil of this earthly life, leaving behind a legacy of family ties strengthened by faith, memory, and an everlasting embrace. Arlene’s story is one of a life beautifully lived, a life whose echoes will resound in the hearts of her loved ones forever.
