Obituary

Rapid City - Arnold V. Gust passed away at his home with his loving wife at his side on April 14th, 2010. He was born May 19th, 1939 in Woodworth, North Dakota to William and Emma Gust. Arnold was raised on the family farm with his brother Gerald and sister Elaine. At the age of 17 he decided to leave the farm and join the U.S. Air Force where he served as an aircraft electrician for 4 years. Prior to his honorable discharge from the Air Force Arnold met the love of his life, Claudette Waltman in Chadron, Nebraska. They were married in 1960 and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary surrounded by their closest family and friends. Arnolds career in water treatment started at the Rapid City water department where he was employed from 1966-1974. He then became employed as a civil servant at Ellsworth AFB with the 28th bomb wing until his retirement in 2000. After his retirement Arnold and Claudette had the opportunity to travel and visit family and friends from Minnesota to Seattle and everywhere in between. With his wife still working full time Arnold soon learned and became the cook of the house. Arnold also took advantage of his retirement years by gardening. He also had an interest in computers where he spent his time researching various things such as automobiles, for which he had a life long passion. Arnie always had an amazing way of expressing his kindness and love, not always with words, but with his warm eyes and loving smile. Arnolds greatest joy in life was being surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and his faithful companion Shadow. Survivors include his wife Claudette and their three children; Bill (Kitty) Gust, Victor (Patty) Gust, Kelly (Rob)Thompson, all of Rapid City. Arnold was blessed with 7 grandchildren; Brandon (Shelli),Victor (Nichole) ,Benjamin, Taylor, Heather, Alyssa, and Kyra. He also had the opportunity to welcome and enjoy 2 great grandsons; Brayden and Kaysen. Visitation will be Sunday, April 18th from 2-4 pm at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be Monday, April 19th at 10:30 am at Calvary Lutheran Church with Pastor Dwight Stensgaard officiating. Burial will follow, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota National Guard at Black Hills National Cemetery. A memorial will be established.
