RAPID CITY- Arthur "Art" M. Schwahn died Monday, April 21, 2014 at his winter home in Mesa, Arizona from an eight year battle with Legionnairesdisease. He was also a 25 year survivor of colon cancer. Art was born Nov. 3, 1930 on a farm in Strasburg, North Dakota. He married Lillian Holzer in 1950 in Strasburg, North Dakota. They lived on a farm for 5 years before moving to Rapid City, S.D. in 1956. Art worked various jobs when moving to Rapid City: Construction, Produce Manager at Red Owl, before becoming a self-made Businessman running his family Janitorial Service, well know at the time as Art's Janitorial and Floor Cleaning. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus "4th degree", Moose Lodge, Elks Club, Eagles Club, Independent Order Of Foresters and Good Sams Travel Club. Art and Lil started traveling in 1975 and became Snowbirds of Mesa, Arizona in 1985, where he did Handyman work for the court they lived in. They made many good friendships and built many memories. He retired his Janitorial Service in 1992, but didn't stop working because working was his hobby. When he wasn't working he enjoyed camping, boating, water-skiing, snowmobiling, polka music, dancing and watching old westerns. He had to have had "Gunsmoke" memorized. He was very proud of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they were a highlight of his life. With the love of his life Lil, they worked, played, danced, sang, cried, laughed and experienced a lifetime of memories in their 63 1/2 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Schwahn, Rapid City; two sons: Artie (Wendy) Schwahn, Rapid City; Allen (Tricia) Schwahn, Rapid City; two daughters: Linda (Scott) Zieske, Billings, MT; LaVerne (Jeff) Rose, Rapid City; 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. He was preceded ns death by his parents and sister, Mary Helen Jundt. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00, Monday, April 28, 2014 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Christian Wake Service will follow at 7:00 p.m. Christian Funeral Mass will be offered at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 29, at St. Therese Catholic Church with Rev. William Zandri presiding. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Rapid City.
