PAPILLION, NEArvella J. (Hernandez) Gross, 73, passed away at Huntington Park Care Center in Papillion, Nebraska on Saturday, August 8, 2009. Arvella was born to Alex Hernandez and Ruth Bluebird on February 17th 1936 in Pine Ridge SD and a member of the Oglala Lakota Nation. She graduated from Pine Ridge High School in 1954. She married Edwin Gross of Yankton SD on September 3rd 1956 in Rapid City SD. Arvella lived in various locations around South Dakota, Nebraska and Arizona while raising 6 children with her husband Edwin. She worked at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home as a nurses aide retiring after 25 years in 1999. Survivors include sons, Jeff Gross and Chris Gross & wife Chong, of Omaha, NE and Andy Gross & wife Patricia, Oakdale, MN; daughters, Frances & husband John Schlueter, The Woodlands, TX, Julia Gross, New York, NY and Tina Gross, Oakdale, MN; a brothers, Ron Hernandez, George Running Horse and sisters, Phyllis Moeller, Charlotte Running Horse and Sonja Hernandez. Grand children, include Giovanna Gross, James Gross, Maureen Gross, Alex Schlueter, and Elizabeth Schlueter. She preceded by husband Edwin L. Gross. All-night wake will begin at 4 p.m. and a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug 16, at Mother Butler Center. Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 17, at St. Isaac Jogues Church. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
