BLACK HAWK-Barbara Allyn Ernst, 82, of Blackhawk, South Dakota passed away on February 8, 2013 in Vista, California. She was preceded in death by her husband Arlo in 2004. Born in 1930 in Maine, Barbara was the eleventh child of parents Frank and Lillian Cox. She is survived by her three daughters: Mary Hanka, Elaine Thompson and Paula Waring, as well as nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. After earning her Licensed Vocational Nursing degree in San Diego, she married Arlo Ernst; a commercial fisherman from South Dakota who would become the love of her life. For twenty years, Arlo and Barbara sailed around the world with Starkist Tuna. Samoa, Africa, Puerto Rico, and New Zealand were just a few of the exotic places they experienced together before retiring in 1991 to Arlo's home state of South Dakota. She went back to San Diego in 2011 to live with her youngest daughter and spent her final days surrounded by family. According to her wishes, Barbara will be laid to rest with Arlo on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at the National Cemetery in South Dakota. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Grace United Methodist Church in Piedmont with the Rev. Howie Baird officiating.
