Barbara J. "Barb" Olson, 73 of Rapid City, died at her home on Wednesday, June 21, 2017.

She was born October 1, 1943 to Joseph and Mildred (Thompson) Mahood in Summit, NJ. Upon completing high school she graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with a Bachelor's Degree in Education.

During the summer of 1964, while working at Yellowstone National Park, she met Robert Olson. They were married on June 19, 1965 in New Jersey.  They moved to Rapid City where Barb began her teaching career at Rapid City High School.  She taught English and also coached the Cobber Co-Eds.  During the summer, she coached girls softball.

Barb retired from teaching in 1972 and soon began working at Meiner's Animal Clinic, recently completing 40 years as office manager.

She is survived by her husband, Robert, Rapid City, daughter Joann (Scott) Waltman, Charleston, SC, her son David (Michelle) Olson, Rapid City, her grandson, Robert, Rapid City, her sister, Leslie Brookes, Rapid City and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother David Mahood and Helen Mahood Ball.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 26 at 10:30am at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Rapid City preceded by visitation beginning at 10:00am. Interment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in her name at The Humane Society of the Black Hills.
