Obituary

RAPID CITY--Bernard "Pat" McGinnis, 73, passed away on February 28, 2015, at his home. He was born on March 13, 1941, in Geddes, SD, to Ben and Vera (Davis) McGinnis. Pat was raised by his grandparents in Bovee, SD, and moved to Rapid at the age of 13. After finishing high school and serving three years in the Navy, he returned to Rapid City, met the love of his life, Sheila Cooper, in 1962 and married that year. He joined the Rapid City Fire Department in 1963 and retired as Battalion Chief with 32 years of dedicated service. He was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Church, and he and his wife, Sheila, enjoyed volunteering with the "Dusting Angels". He loved talking and joking with people, especially his family, and made friends easily wherever he went. He was a man of his word and always offered a helping hand to anyone in need. He passionately enjoyed hunting, fishing, and living life "on the go". His survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Sheila (Cooper) McGinnis; two daughters, Suzanne (Roy) Berry of Newell and Christine (Bobby) Simetich of Lincoln, NE and six grandchildren that he dearly loved, Austin and Collin Berry and Isabella, Alexander, Katarina and Kristina Simetich; one sister,, Donna (Roy) Gaines, Vancouver, WA; and many nieces and nephews, other family members and many dear friends. Visitation will be on Thursday, March 5, from 6-7 pm, with a 7 pm Christian wake service at Blessed Sacrament Church. A Christian funeral mass will be offered at 10 am on Friday, March 6, at Blessed Sacrament Church with the Rev. Brian Lane presiding. Interment, with military honors rendered by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the US Navy will be at 1:30 pm at the Black Hills National Cemetery. Any donations received will be given to local charities in Pat's name.
