Obituary

RAPID CITY - Bernice Holland Jones, 100, Rapid City, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, at Rapid City Regional Hospital Auxiliary Hospice House. Bernice Holland was born on August 30, 1910, to George and Grace (Gilbert) Holland. She graduated from South Dakota State University and attended Columbia University in New York City. She served as Headmistress at St. Marys School for Indian Girls in Springfield, SD. In 1943 Bernice adopted Ann Prairie Chicken, a full-blood Oglala Lakota Indian baby girl from the Pine Ridge Reservation. She may have been the first single non-Indian woman to adopt at Indian baby at that time. Bernice was united in marrioage to Emmett D. Jones on May 25, 1953. Emmett and Bernice both taught and retired as teachers from the Flandreau (South Dakota) Indian School. Rapid City has been her home since. Bernice was a vibrant influence for the Episcopal Church in Sough Dakota since a very early age. While still a young girl. During the 14 years in which she and her husband Emmett lived in Flandreau, she held all offices of Episcopal Church Woman, plus served as organist. She served as cook/manager of Thunderhead Episcopal Center in the northern Black Hills for several years where Emmett was caretaker. They also served together as caretakers at Camp Remington for many years. At St. Andrews, she had been treasurer for the ECW, Black Hills Deanery and the vestry. For a number of years she also served as organist and remained an active member of the altar guild and Bible study group until recently. Survivors include her daughter, Ann Sun Bear-Prairie Chicken (Melbert), Rapid City; four grandchildren; Pamela (John) Obeslo, Las Vegas, NV, Brian D. Ritzman, Phoenix, AZ, Nicole Prairie Chicken, El Cajon, CA and Nicholas Kautz, Rapid City; eight great-grandchildren, Cory, Crystal and Vanessa Obeslo, Las Vegas, Brian S. Ritzman, Rapid City, Mercedes Ritzman, Phoenix, Blake Two Eagle, Rapid City, Nevalyn Two Eagle, El Cajon and Estevan Kautz, Rapid City and four great-great-grandchildren, Olivia Raine, Las Vegas, Johanna Mae, Las Vegas, Dealyn Dodge, Phoenix and Brian D. C. Ritzman, Rapid City. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Emmett D. Jones in 1997 and daughter, Diana Good Medicine-Kautz in 2004. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church with The Rev. Kathy Monson Lutes, The Rev. Deacon Virginia Bird and The Rev. Deacon Marty Garwood presiding. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.
