Obituary

Rapid City - Bette Starr Hauk was born on May 21, 1924 in Tulare, SD. She departed this life on April 19, 2015. She was one of eight children born to Orrin and Martha [Tasche] Starr. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, [Lyle, Marvin, Dale, and Gene Starr], and her beloved daughter, Marcia Kay Hauk. The family moved to Deadwood, SD in 1930 where Bette attended school. Bette was a graduate of Deadwood High School. She met her husband to be at the Dance Pavilion in Spearfish and they always enjoyed dancing together. She married Frank L. Hauk on July 19, 1941 in Broadus, Montana. During World War II, Bette worked for Lockheed Corporation in California. Following Frank's return from the South Pacific she joined him at Camp Swift, TX. During their 73 years, 9 months of marriage, Bette was a devoted wife and loving mother to their five children. Except for the brief time she lived in California, and they lived in Texas and North Carolina, they lived in Deadwood, Lead, Sturgis, Rapid City and Black Hawk. They remodeled one home in Lead, and built two homes together - one in Lead and one in Black Hawk. Bette was the quintessential homemaker. She will be greatly missed by her surviving family: husband, Col. Frank L. Hauk (retired); sister, Bonnie Roeszler, two brothers, Dean and Wayne Starr; children, Annette and Lamont VanDover, Carole and James Koellner, Robert and Peggy Hauk, Frank and Cindy Hauk; nine grandchildren, Steven Schmid, Katherine Starr Schmid, Marcia Kay VanDover, Jamie Koellner Allen, Kristi Koellner McCulloch, Jennifer Hauk, Christopher Hauk, Nicholas Hauk, Daniel Hauk; six great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Her memorial service will be 10:30 am Friday, May 29 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 910 Soo San Drive with the Rev. Kathy Monson Lutes officiating. Following lunch at the church, inurnment will be at 1:30 pm at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD. Memorials in dedication to Bette can be made to the American Cancer Society or to the charity of your choice.
