Obituary

Betty Ann (Sundby) McFall was born November 16, 1927 at home in Dawson, Minnesota to Anton J. and Bertha (Vestmo or Westmoe) Sundby. She died June 2, 2017 at Fountain Springs Health Care in Rapid City, SD.

Both of her parents were born in Norway and immigrated to Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota, her father at the age of two and her mother at the age of seventeen. Betty was the second of four children. Her sister, sixteen months older than she, was developmentally disabled, so Betty helped care for her ailing father and older sister as well as her two younger siblings. Her father died when she was eight years old. Her mother supported the children by candling eggs, making blood sausage, laundering clothes and working for area farmers. She finally became a clerk at the Super Valu store where the patrons enjoyed speaking to her in Norwegian.

Betty could speak only Norwegian when she started school, but learned English rapidly and was a good student. She graduated from Dawson High School and went on to complete a private secretarial course at the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She worked at the Farmer's Elevator in Dawson for nineteen years.

In 1964 John Sundby, Betty's brother, and Josephine Scheidt, Forrest McFall's neighbor on Rapid Creek at Big Bend, decided Betty should come to Rapid City to meet Forrest. Neither Betty nor Forrest had ever married and both were living with their widowed mothers to help financially. Betty and Forrest McFall were married at Grace Lutheran Church in Dawson, MN on April 25, 1965.

They lived in Scottsbluff, NE where Betty was the bookkeeper for Panhandle Paint and Title Center which they owned with Forrest's sister and her husband, Howard and Goldie Burnell. In 1972, they relocated to Rapid City, lived on Assembly Road along Rapid Creek, and lost everything in the Rapid City flood on June 9, 1972.

Betty worked at the Pennington County Treasurers Office during busy times for five years, but decided she wanted to travel with Forrest on his sales route to neighboring states. They loved traveling and on two trips to Norway, enjoyed visiting Betty's uncles and cousins in the Larvik and Trondheim areas. They traveled to China and enjoyed several cruises especially a Baltic cruise with stops in Russia and the Scandinavian countries.

Church was a very important part of Betty's life. In Dawson, she sang in the choir and participated in the women's church groups. In Rapid City, Betty was a very active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was the secretary of the Trinity Lutheran Church Women for years. Betty and Forrest participated in all the church groups open to them. She was a charter member of the Sons of Norway Lodge in Rapid City and its secretary for many years. She loved to volunteer at the Chapel in the Hills with her long-time friend, Ardelle Erdmann. She participated in Cosmopals and loved to visit with friends over coffee, play games and shop.

She made great "Betty" dinners for the Sundby kids. They loved the roasts and meatballs with mashed potatoes and gravy. Betty loved desserts so she always served cakes, pies, cookies, and ice cream.

Betty is survived by her brother John's wife, Kathy Sundby of Rapid City, her niece, Jill Sundby (Mark) Van Alstyne of Helena, Montana, five nephews, Johnny (Stephanie) Sundby and Bobby (Genae) Sundby of Rapid City and Mike (Barb) Spurbeck, Mark Spurbeck, and Scott (Brandee) Spurbeck of Minneapolis. She is also survived by Forrest's loving family, two sisters, Goldie Burnell, Scottsbluff, NE, and Yvonne Barton, Apple Valley, MN, and Forrest's seventeen nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, her only brother, John Sundby, both sisters, Grace Spurbeck and Arlene Sundby, her niece, Mary Spurbeck and six of Forrest's siblings.

Betty's funeral service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rapid City on Thursday, June 8, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be with her husband at the Black Hills National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. the day of her funeral. Forrest entered the Navy on his eighteenth birthday. He was among the draftees who graduated from high school (Spearfish) while he was on active duty. Forrest later graduated from the SD School of Mines and Technology in civil engineering.

The family thanks everyone at Fountain Springs Health Care for caring for Betty and providing a wide range of activities which she enjoyed.

Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Radio Broadcast, Chapel in the Hills or the School of Mines Foundation.
