Betty Jean Wiley was born in Huron, South Dakota, on June 4, 1927, to Ray and Irene Miller. She grew up on a farm south of Iroquois, South Dakota, where she loved playing with the farm's lambs and kittens. She graduated from Iroqouis High School in 1945 and was her class salutatorian. She worked at Northwestern Public Service following high school. On June 18, 1950, she married the late Donald Gene Wiley, of Huron.

In 1952, the FBI stationed Don in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and later transferred him to Newark, New Jersey. In the small suburb of Metuchen, Betty and Don began raising four children. In 1967, Don was transferred to Rapid City, South Dakota, where they remained for the rest of their lives. Betty was a loving and attentive homemaker throughout her marriage. Don passed away shortly after his 80th birthday in 2007.

Betty's early childhood passion was music. Her first memory, at the age of four, was singing in the Methodist Church of Esmond, South Dakota. She sang a solo, "Jesus Loves Me." She continued singing throughout her elementary and secondary school years. In her adult life, she was frequently a hymn soloist during services at South Canyon Lutheran Church, where she was a member for many years.

In 1979, nearly all her children having left the nest, she joined Sweet Adelines, which specializes in a cappella, four-part harmony music, barbershop style. For nearly forty years, Betty sang and toured the region singing in a quartet and with the main group. On her 90th birthday, the group came and performed for her at the Echo Ridge Apartments in Rapid City, where she moved to in 2015.

Betty adored her four children, seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She wrote about all their personal accomplishments and significant life events in a journal she filled cover to cover. She enjoyed their many visits and cherished the time she spent with them.

Survivors include her four children Gene (ex-wife Beth), Todd (Robin), Ann, and Steve (Brenda), grandchildren Richard (Kristin) Wiley, Susan (Tim) Ward, Lindsay (Josh Weatherly) Wiley, Michael (Caitlin McLane) Wiley, Kirsten (Ryan) Drown, Devin Wiley, and Morgan (Dalton) Grossheim, great-grandchildren Jackson, Nathan, and Sarah Ward, Amelia and John Paul Wiley, close family friend Huyen Doan and her daughter Vy Pham, scores of nieces, grand-nieces, nephews, and grand-nephews and her beloved cat, Molly.
