Bill Bunn was born in Denver, CO on March 30, 1936 to William and Esther (Layh) Bunn. He passed away on August 1, 2022 at Peaceful Pines Memory Care Center in Rapid City, SD. He had suffered with Lewey Bodies Dementia for about 10 years.
In 1937 the Bunn family moved to a farm southwest of Carlock, SD in Gregory County. He learned to be an outstanding farmer and dairy man and loved farming his entire life.
Bill attended country school until entering Gregory High School. In high school he ran track, was the co-captain of the football team, and was the senior class vice president. Upon graduation in 1954, he was drafted by the US Army.
He took his basic training and AIT at Ft. Knox, KY, and then was transferred to the armored division at Ft. Polk, Louisiana. He was discharged in 1958 and returned to the farm in Gregory County. He was very proud of his service and a very proud and patriotic American.
In June 1959 he married Donna Covey in Winner, SD. A son Bradley arrived in 1961 on his 25 th birthday. A son Brian followed in 1963 and a daughter Lori in 1965.
Bill began his career with the US Postal Service in 1961 in Gregory. He then transferred to Rapid City in 1974. He retired in 1994 as a rural mail carrier.
Bill loved everything about the outdoors. Camping and fishing were his favorites. He also loved motorcycling through the hills and he and Donna even took a trip to Colorado on the bike.
Bill was a 'jack of all trades". He could fix anything and was very successful at it. He was an amazing carpenter having helped his friend Dave remodel homes, some were historical structures throughout Rapid City. He also was an artist through wood working and painting.
In 1974 Bill accepted salvation in Jesus. In 1977 he was baptized into the family of God. He then went on to serve the Lord in various capacities and different churches throughout the Black Hills. Even in the end, though he didn't recognize his family or friends he still maintained his faith in Jesus and would acknowledge his love for the Lord.
Bill is survived by his wife of 63 years Donna, Rapid City, SD; a son Brad, Missouri, a son Brian, Rapid City, and a daughter Lori, Billings, MT. Also surviving Bill is a grand daughter and grandson in-law Kelsey and Nick of Billings, MT and a very special great grandson Jack. One of his last cognitive times was the day he met Jack and he fell in love with him immediately. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, many dear nieces and nephews, and various wonderful friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws Chet and Winifred Covey, his sister and brother -in-law Darleen and Fritz Pereboom, and his brother-in-law Donald Covey.
Bill will be missed by so many that loved him. His loss leaves a big hole in our lives and our hearts. But he would tell us to trust Jesus to fill that hole. He would tell us that he is going home and that we will meet again someday.
