Obituary

Rapid City – Bonita "Bonnie" Steinback, 83, died Saturday, December 6, 2025 at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital.

Visitation will be 4:00 to 6:00 pm Monday, December 15, 2025 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.

Service at 11:00 am Tuesday, December 16 at Canyon Lake United Methodist Church.

Burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Bonita (Bonnie) Ann Steinback was born in Auburn, Nebraska on March 3,1942 to Howard and Evelyn Kite. She was the oldest of 5 children.

She attended school in Auburn and graduated in 1959. She continued her education at Peru State College in Peru, Nebraska graduating with a degree in Elementary Education. She moved to Omaha, Nebraska and taught school at Wake-Robin Elementary School. After several years she decided to move to Red Oak, Iowa and continued her teaching career. She lived with 5 of her girlfriends.

In the mid 1960's she returned to Omaha and met her husband, Paul Steinback while attending a singles group called Crossroads sponsored by The First United Methodist Church.

In 1968, Paul proposed to Bonnie and they were married on December 28, 1968 at the First United Methodist Church and continued to live in Omaha for the next few months until the school year ended.

At that time they decided that they did not want to live in a big city to raise a family. They decided to move to Rapid City, South Dakota in the spring of 1969.

In the fall of 1969 Bonnie was hired as a teacher by the Rapid City School System as a 3rd grade elementary teacher. She was assigned to Cleghorn Elementary School. She was there until the 1972 flood and she was reassigned to Grandview Elementary School in southeastern Rapid City. She taught 5th grade until her retirement.

Paul and Bonnie raised three children, Ryan, Heather and Wade. Bonnie was an active part of their lives and was a dedicated mother.

Bonnie was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority in Rapid City, and a lifetime member of the Canyon Lake United Methodist Church.

Her hobbies included sewing and making clothes, camping, vacationing, and motorcycle traveling with her husband.

Bonnie is survived by her husband Paul Steinback of Rapid City, and her children Ryan (Nickie) Steinback of Rapid City, Heather Steinback of Rapid City and Wade (Katie) Steinback of Crestview, FL. She has 7 grandchildren: Rachelle, Charles, Kirsten, of Rapid City and Seth (Bex), Caleb (Katelen), Thomas, and Levi of Crestview, Florida. She is also survived by brothers: Philip Kite of West Palm Beach, FL, Jim (Nancy) Kite of Auburn, NE, and Gary Kite of Melbourne, KY; and sister Claudia (Dennis) Banks of Southport, NC.

She was preceded in death by her parents Howard and Evelyn (Harbison) Kite.
