Obituary

Brad L. Blumenthal , 64, of Rapid City died January 6, 2024 in Scottsdale Arizona.

Brad Lee Blumenthal was born in Rapid City, SD, on April 6th,1959, to Benge and Marjorie (Frantz) Blumenthal. He was the second of three sons.

Brad grew up in Rapid City, SD. He enjoyed hunting deer, antelope, and small game across South Dakota with his father, grandfather, and brothers. Many memorable years were spent at his family's cabin at Angostura Lake. He participated as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout in his younger years. Brad was also a man of many physical talents and skills. He played multiple sports throughout his life including: baseball, football, golf, and wrestling. Wrestling was one of Brad's favorite activities. He took physically challenging jobs during the summer that would help keep him in shape for the wrestling season: landscaping, concrete work, and loading trucks at the Coke bottlers. Brad went on to love weightlifting throughout his life where he was able to break the South Dakota record for benching in his competing class in 2004.

Brad graduated Rapid City Central High School in 1977. From there, he went on to further his education at the University of South Dakota. Brad was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at USD where many of his brothers became lifelong friends. He was also elected as SAE President his Senior year. There, he was presented with endless opportunities to pull his ever famous, never overtold pranks! In 1981, Brad graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. For the following 42 years, Brad went on to fulfill his business career in the insurance industry, most recently with Security First Insurance.  Brad was involved with a variety of organizations and held esteemed insurance designations: Certified Insurance Counselor, Certified Risk Manager, Small Business Advocate of the Year, Sertoma member/President, National Board Member with Mid America Technical Conference (sole representative for South Dakota). Brad was known to be one of the best insurance professionals in the region. He was held in high regard by his peers, clients (of whom many became friends), and the industry.

From 1984 to 2012, Brad was married to Jan Leigh Kahler. Together, they welcomed their first child, Tyler, in 1988. Two years later, they welcomed their second child, Nicole. Brad was an amazing and loving father. He was fully present in the lives of his children, never missing any of their programs, award ceremonies, and the numerous years of sporting events. He enjoyed teaching his kids about Jesus, how to ski, hunt, fish, and drive. Some of the best times were camping and boating at the lake all summer long. Brad continued showing his unlimited abilities in barefoot skiing, slalom skiing, wakeboarding, and wake surfing. Brad could skim his elbow on the water while cutting his turns slalom skiing. He loved the challenge of throwing the kids off of the innertubes, even if it meant he got yelled at in the end. His heart was always evident in his goal to serve others and love on his children's friends as if they were his own. Brad's selflessness was due to his personal relationship with Christ. Through the years he was a member at South Canyon Baptist and Rimrock E. Free Church, and served within the churches in various means. It was always a priority for him to send his kids to Christ centered schooling to ensure they grew to know his Savior as well.

Brad faced some life-altering trials throughout his life, but he faced them with dignity and perseverance. In 2003, he suddenly lost his father, Ben. Brad's mother, Marjorie, experienced a variety of health challenges in her later years.  Brad was a faithful son, oh and her "favorite son," he would say!  Majorie passed away in August of 2023.

Brad had a rekindling with his high school sweetheart, Pam (Erickson) Chaussee. In 2015 they began to build a new life together. Over the years, Brad and Pam enjoyed some traveling. They created memories with Brad's Children (Tyler and Nikki) and Pam's children (Megan and Calar).

Brad was a proud "Papa Brad" to Tyler's three children (Leah, Colby, and Dane) as well as "Mr. Brad" to Megan's four children (Afton, Calla, Lucy and Dallas). Brad enjoyed visiting his daughter, Nikki, in Nevada, Pam's kids, Megan and Calar, in Colorado and his brothers, Brent in Texas and Bob in Florida.

In mid-November 2023, Brad was suddenly and unexpectedly diagnosed with metastatic renal cell carcinoma. In an attempt to face this horrible diagnosis head-on, Brad and Pam became temporary "Snowbird's" in Arizona to start treatment at a renowned cancer center, MD Anderson.  Brad's cancer was aggressive and more extensive than expected. His battle was short, but Brad faced it as he did everything in life, with positivity and no complaints. Brad lost his battle on January 6th, 2024; just 7 weeks after his confirmed diagnosis.

Brad was preceded in death by his parents, Benge and Marjorie Blumenthal. He is survived by Pam Chaussee; his children; Tyler (Laura) Blumenthal of Rapid City, SD, and Nicole (Kyle) Davis of Carson City, NV, Pam's children; Megan (Marcus) Mason of Parker, CO, Calar (Martina) Chaussee of Wellington, CO,  his brothers: Brent (Julie Sieh) Blumenthal of Georgetown, TX, and Bob (Jan) Blumenthal of Punta Gorda, FL, numerous nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews.  Grandchildren include Leah, Colby and Dane Blumenthal, and Colorado grandchildren; Afton, Calla, Lucy, and Dallas Mason.
