Obituary

Bradley J. Smith, 72, of Rapid City died on Friday, June 3, at his home with his wife by his side. Brad was born in Hanley Falls, MN on Feb. 4, 1939 to Byron and Ordella Smith. When he was 6, the family, including his sister, Geraldine, moved to Morris, MN. As a teenager, Brad worked with his dad and uncle Bill in their Firestone tire store. He graduated from high school at West Central School of Agriculture in Morris, and from North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton ND in the Electrical Trade program. He went to work for Dalager Electric in Morris. Brad married the love of his life, Mary Ann Hennen, in Morris at Assumption Chirch. on Oct. 4, 1958. Three daughters, Elaine, Karen, and Marilyn, were born to the couple in Morris. In 1961 they moved to Rapid City where four more children were born, Bradley Jr., Nancy, Eric, and Jeanne. Brad worked for Baumgartner Electric until 1968 when he went into electrical contracting as Brads Electric, and in 1976 he bought Gadsden Electric in Spearfish. The family moved there at that time. In 1983 Brad ended that business and worked in Saudi Arabia for Salamco Co. for a year, then as project manager for Riviera Electric in Denver, and as superintendent for Simmons Electric in Denver and in College Station, TX, and later in Houston. Mary Ann and daughter Jeanne followed him to these places, the other children now on their own or in college. After eight years in Texas, he and Mary Ann returned to Rapid City, where he worked for Lighting Maintenance Co. After retiring in 2006, he worked for Project Solutions as an electrical inspector. Brad received early faith formation in the Lutheran Church, and since his marriage he has been a faithful member of the Catholic Church. He served in the choir in College Station, and as Eucharistic minister and RCIA sponsor for several years at the Cathedral in Rapid City. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He loved his family, music, dancing, sailing, camping, fishing, and in younger years spent many summers with the family at Angostura Reservoir. He and Mary Ann belonged to the 39 Dance Club for several years. Most of all, he liked to work at electrical and other projects, improving and inventing as he went. He could do any and all repair work, whether electrical, plumbing, carpentry, block work whatever needed doing. He was always optimistic and loved life. He fought lung cancer and related heart conditions for the last three years. He never gave up.
