COLTONBruce O. "Hammer" Johnson, 55, of Colton, and formerly of Hill City, died at Sanford Healthcare in Sioux Falls on Monday, October 14, 2013. Bruce was born on June 24, 1958, in Rapid City, to Owen C. and Norma M. (Knapp) Johnson. He grew up and attended Rapid City Central High School. After school, he served in the US Navy in Hawaii and California. After his service, Bruce returned to the Black Hills and was a logger in the Hill City area. He was united in marriage to Colleen Guthmiller in 1987. Bruce eventually moved to Sundance, Wyo. and had his own logging company, B & H Logging. In 2008, he moved back to Hill City and starting logging and doing log accent work with his daughter Hannah. He built a 35 ft. tall rocking chair on Highway 385 near Trout Haven. In 2012 he moved to Colton and was employed as a driver for Old Dominion Trucking until his passing. Hammer was an avid motorcyclist and loved to work with horses. He was a cowboy at heart. Survivors include 2 daughters, Hannah Johnson, Hill City and Carrie Johnson, Sioux Falls; his mother, Norma Johnson, Rapid City; his father, Owen Johnson, Hill City; 3 sisters, Susan Bendel and Karen (Dick) Shuck, both of Rapid City and Cheryl Johnson, Kaneohe, Hawaii; Hannah and Carrie's mother, Colleen Johnson, Sioux Falls, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Owen Johnson in 2008. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with Pastor Sharla McCaskell officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Lawn Memorial Park.
