IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Camden Henry
J Raue
March 19, 1939 – May 10, 2025
Camden "Cam" Henry Joseph Raue, 86, of Rapid City, South Dakota passed away with his wife by his side on May 10, 2025, at St. Martin Village. A celebration of life service will occur on June 2, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Osheim and Schmidt Funeral Home with Rev. Chris Swarthout officiating. Cam will be laid to rest at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with full military honors.
Cam's journey began at the family farmhouse near Salem, SD where he was born to Henry Joseph and Florence (Hall) Raue on March 19, 1939. Cam and his father shared a birthday. His father died unexpectedly when Cam was 2 years old. His mother later married Lew Campbell. He received his education at the public schools in Salem graduating in 1957. While in school, Cam met his future wife, Dorothy Liegh Harsma of Humboldt, SD at a music contest. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force following graduation. Cam and Dorothy "dated" via letter writing until their wedding on November 2, 1958, in Humboldt. The young couple moved to Rapid City, SD and were blessed with 3 children: Rhonda, Randall "Randy", and Robert "Rob".
Cam served in the U.S. Air Force for 4 years. After being honorably discharged he worked for 2 years at The Northwestern Bell Telephone Company prior to beginning his career in law enforcement. He joined the Rapid City Police Department and worked as a Patrolman and Detective. One of the most tragic things that directly impacted Cam was the Rapid City Flood of 1972. After making sure his family was safe, he went to work the night of the flood and spent the next week helping with recovery efforts. During his time in law enforcement, Cam earned 2 college degrees in Criminal Justice. After leaving the RCPD, he worked for Pennington County and the State of South Dakota as a Probation Officer. At the time of his retirement, he was in an administrative role with the Pennington County Jail.
With a lot of life to live after retirement, Cam and Dorothy purchased a home with a large outbuilding on 40 wooded acres near Piedmont, SD. It was referred to as "The Mountain" and was an incredibly special place to Cam and his family. Cam occupied his time with collecting Ford Broncos, working in his shop, riding his 4 wheelers and side by sides, cutting down "bug wood" trees, building a barn, photographing nature, identifying birds at the feeders, spoiling his grandchildren, reminiscing about the good ol' days spent riding motorcycles at Gordon Gulch, and relaxing in his chair. In 2014 when The Mountain became too much to manage, Cam and Dorothy moved to St. Martin Village in Rapid City where they were able to spend time relaxing with far fewer responsibilities. Cam's long and interesting journey came to an end on May 10, 2025, with his wife by his side.
Cam filled a lot of roles in his life and was an inspiration to many people including his wife. His 86 years were spent enjoying the little things like a beautiful sunset, a call from one of his grandchildren, a lemon flavored dessert, or sitting on the deck enjoying the view with his wife. He had many interests and enjoyed riding and fixing all kinds of 2, 3, and 4 wheeled vehicles. Cam also enjoyed deer hunting, collecting every form of the classic Ford Bronco, watching college basketball (especially Duke), collecting cannon replicas, telling tales from his life to his grandchildren and friends, maintaining lovely homes, and generously hosting countless family gatherings. Cam was known for his "winks" which reassured the recipient that everything was going to be okay, and he taught the next 3 generations how to wink. Before his passing, he had shared with family that his favorite time of life was raising his 3 children with Dorothy and the adventures they had all together. Cam said what he was thinking and never shied away from any situation. The memories of him are endless and he will be greatly missed.
Cam was preceded in death by his father, mother, stepfather, and his older brother Philip Raue. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, his children: Rhonda (Jim) Miller of Burlington, IA, Randall (Kerry) Raue of Spearfish, SD, and Robert (Christal) Raue of Caputa, SD; his seven grandchildren: Paige (Ryan) Deets of Burlington, IA, Parker (Danielle) Miller of Burlington, IA, Sara (Jake) Larsen of Whitewood, SD, Ryan Raue of Rapid City, SD, Bradley Grimm of Denver, CO, Ericka (Terrance) Kampa of Tea, SD, and Gentry Raue of Caputa, SD. He is also survived by 7 great grandchildren, his younger brother, Ray (Bobbie) Campbell of Denver, CO as well as many other family and friends.
