Obituary

Carrol Francis Krause, 78, died on October 12, 2014 at Rapid City, SD. Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 16, from 5 until 7 pm; with a Christian wake service at 7:00 p.m. at the Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Christian Funeral Mass will be offered at 11:00 am on Friday, Oct. 17, at St. Therese Catholic Church in Rapid City with Fr. William Zandri presiding. Interment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors. Carrol Krause was born in 1936 at Petersburg, Nebraska. He was one of eleven children born to John and Rose Krause. He graduated from St. John's High School in Petersburg; received Bachelors and Masters degrees from Wayne State College, Wayne, Nebraska and an educational doctorate from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska. He pursued post-doctoral work at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, including one year in Korea, and used the G.I. bill to help finance his education. Carrol married Joan Taylor on July 15, 1957 at Albion, Nebraska. Joan was the daughter of Harold and Angela Taylor. To this union were born six children. Carrol Krause devoted most of his working career to public education. He began teaching junior high science at Seward, NE. Later he served as high school principal at Mead, NE and superintendent at Gresham and Yutan schools in NE. He was a Professor and Chair of the Division of Education and Psychology at Southern State College in Springfield, SD; Provost of the University of South Dakota/Springfield and the University of South Dakota. He was Commissioner of Higher Education for the State of Montana for eight years before retiring. He later accepted the position of the Executive Director of the Nebraska State College System and served for 10 years before again retiring. He was called out of retirement twice to serve as Interim President of Mount Marty College in Yankton, South Dakota and again as Interim Commissioner of Higher Education in Montana. Proceeding him in death were his parents, sisters; Margorie, Arlene, Donna and brothers Myron (Mick) and Robert Krause. He is survived by his wife Joan, six children: Catherine (James) Robinet of Vermillion, SD, Becky (Jeff) Badorek of Lincoln, NE, Greg (Brenda) Krause of Colorado Springs, CO, Sharon (Bob) Rion of Ft. Calhoun, NE, Diane (Ed) Hastings of Helena, MT. and John (Catherine) Krause of Colorado Springs, CO; five brothers and sisters, eighteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Memorials may be directed to Mount Marty College in Yankton, SD or the American Cancer Society.
