RAPID CITY- Charles M. Boland, 83, died peacefully Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Fountain Springs Health Care.
Charlie was born on May 8, 1933 in Farmingdale, to Edward and Victoria (Harrison) Boland. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1951. He was drafted into the US Army in 1953 and later detailed to the US Air Force where he served two years at Molesworth England USAF as a mechanic and operator of heavy equipment. Upon being honorably discharged in 1955, he returned home and found employment at the Rapid City Journal. He married Dorothy Nickel on July 25, 1964 at the church of the Immaculate Conception and four children were born of this union.
Charlie retired from the Rapid City Journal in 1996 after 49 years of dutiful service and during that time he worked for eight different publishers. Positions held during his career include newspaper carrier, route drive, journeyman printer, and printer. After his retirement, he stayed busy with various part time jobs, including delivery driver for the Visitor Magazine and courtesy driver for Rapid Chevrolet.
Charlie was a member of the Blessed Sacrament congregation and a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge #1187. He mostly enjoyed watching baseball of all levels and followed the local Little League kids all the way up to the Major Leagues. Charlie also enjoyed watching his grandkids athletic games.
Charlie is survived by his three sons: Mike (Lisa) Boland, Pierre; Jim (Jeannine) Boland, Rochester, NY; Kelly (Carol) Boland, Rapid City; daughter, Jodee Boland, Rapid City; brother, Leo Boland, Rapid City; sister, Loretta Wiehl, Piedmont; seven grandchildren: Priscilla and Augustine, Jameson and Jessica, Cara and Kaylee, and Coral.
He was preceded in death by his enduring wife, Dorothy; his parents; one sister; and one brother.
Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with a 7:00 p.m. Christian Wake Service.
Christian Funeral Mass will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 1, at Blessed Sacrament Church.
Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with full military honors rendered by the South Dakota Army National Guard and the VFW Post 1273.
Memorials have been established to the American Heart Association and Rapid City Regional Hospital Auxiliary Hospice House.
