Obituary

Rapid City - Charles Edward Jordan, 84, of Rapid City, SD, died Friday, June 10, at Bella Vista Nursing Home in Rapid City. Charles was born January 21, 1927 in Sturgis, SD to John and Ethel Jordan. He grew up on the family ranch and graduated from Rapid City High School in 1944. He served in the Army from May of 1945 until October of 1946. He then began his college education at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, and graduated in 1950 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 1952, Charles returned to the family ranching business in Meade Co. In 1960 he married Joanne Horgan and had one son, Jon P. Jordan. Charles remained in the ranching industry and served on many advisory boards including SD Stockgrowers, and Society of Range Management. Charles enjoyed traveling the world and was an avid skier of both water and snow. A quote from the Over the Hill Gang chairman (a national snow skiing organization) says it best- He is the archetypical cowboy -- tall and slender, moustache, drawl and all. Walking down the streets of St. Anton or St. Moritz with his OTHG friends, his Buffalo-robe vest and cowboy boots catch everyones eye. Thats legendary. More surprising to most, he is a real cowboy who owns a ranch in South Dakota, has a degree in Land Management and spent more time on a horse than most of us have in a car. Thats legendary. He went on every OTHG ski trip to Europe for a number of years, and we celebrated his birthday on every one. He is always a hit with the ladies with his gracious and gentlemanly way. Chuck Jordan is truly legendary. Chuck has Parkinsons now, and although he skied through it for years, it has finally slowed him down. We can only wish him the best and hope that the True Cowboy of OTHG rides with us again. Charles is survived by his son, Jon P. Jordan, his daughter-in-law Nancy and three wonderful grandchildren, Travis, Austin and Karsten. He is also survived by one sister, Shirley Koons and her husband Harry of San Diego, CA. and 2 nieces, Terry Culpepper of New Zealand, Krista Peterson of San Diego, and 1 nephew, Weston Koons of San Diego. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Ethel (Hanson) Jordan and a niece, Michele Koons. Visitation will 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, June 13, 2011 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City, SD. Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, at the funeral Home with Rev. Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial with military honors by the Rushmore VFW 1273 Honor Guard and the South Dakota National Guard will be 3:00 p.m. June 14 at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. A memorial has been established.
