Obituary

RAPID CITY - Charlotte L. Knight, 92, Rapid City, died Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at a local nursing home. She was born Nov. 20, 1918, at Hawarden, Iowa, the daughter of James and Nettie (Moline) Johnston. She attended and graduated from Hawarden schools. While in high school, she was active in chorus and Pepper Steppers and at the age of 18 began teaching country school. Charlotte married Harold E. Knight on Aug. 10, 1940 at St. Paul, Minn. She worked as a night telephone operator in Hawarden while Harold served in the U.S. Army during WWII. After his return from service, they moved to Alexandria, Minn., where Charlotte continued working for the telephone company until their children were born. In Minnesota, they enjoyed fishing and hunting and were active in church. The Knights moved to Rapid City in 1958, where Charlotte held a variety of jobs, including a position as administrative secretary with the South Dakota Highway Patrol for 17 years. She and Harold were married for 66 years before he passed away in 2006. Survivors include a son, Stephen Knight, Cambridge, Minn.; a daughter, Patricia Unruh, Gilpin County, Colo.; two granddaughters, Emily Ward, Golden Valley, Minn., and Melanie Unruh, Gilpin County; a grandson, Brian Unruh, Gilpin County; and three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Grace and Evelyn Ward of Golden Valley. Services will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at the First Congregational Church with the Rev. Ted Huffman officiating. Inurnment will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday, March 7, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. The procession will depart at 8:45 a.m. from Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. A memorial has been established.
