Charlotte's father set great store in education and was determined his children would complete high school even through the depression days. Charlotte's father was educated along with his children. He would read all of the school books and sometimes while the children needed them for classes. When the last child graduated, her parents were honored at commencement for achievement in having all 8 children graduated from Rutland High School After graduation Charlotte worked as a mother's helper. Charlotte and Willard remained in California for awhile and their first son was born. They moved back to Madison, South Dakota, where Willard struck out on his own in the construction business. This is where their daughter was born. In the fall of 1952, they moved again to Rapid City. They lived at 324 E. St. Anne Street for many years. Willard continued as an independent contractor. Their second son was born a couple years later. Over the years Charlotte held a variety of jobs. Her most enjoyable was working at the Francis Case School in the library.
