IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charlyne
Everson
February 14, 1935 – March 29, 2024
"Charlyne came in on the wings of a snowstorm Monday morning February 14, 1935," wrote her mother, Mabel Luckhurst. "Her Daddy [Charles] had passed away on the 20th of August, [six] months before she arrived, so she was pretty special to all of us." Her mother went on to write that the youngest of her six children was so happy, bright, and charming that it provoked jealousy, to which Charlyne would reply, "Oh, I don't mind."
She graduated high school a year early, and later in life would go on to graduate from Black Hills State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education, at age 57, graduating summa cum laude in 1992. In 1999, she received her Master's degree in Education at age 64 from South Dakota State University. While she worked for many years in teaching and aide positions, the majority of her career was spent at Grandview Elementary in Rapid City in the Special Education Department.
She began 68 years of marriage with Dean Everson on February 22, 1952, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Des Moines, IA. Charlyne and Dean shared a love for education, and they were both quick-witted, opinionated, and stubborn. From this marriage came four children, six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and an estimated 214,710 arguments. It was often joked that their light-hearted bantering kept their spark going, and when Charlyne joined Dean in Heaven on March 29, 2024, it was joked that they were already in that groove! Days before she passed, Charlyne had said that Dean was waiting for her in the other room, so it was probably about her punctuality. While we miss them both, we are happy they are together again.
Charlyne was preceded by her parents, Charles Luckhurst and Mabel Engebretson Luckhurst; her husband Dean; infant son William Charles; her sisters Charlett Law, Mercedes Rider, and Geraldine Swanson; brothers Keith Luckhurst, Khoy Luckhurst; sister-in-law Barb Everson, and son-in-law Robert Preston. Charlyne is survived by her daughters, Krista Preston, Kimberley (Robert) Kringen; son, Douglas (Mary) Everson, all of Rapid City. Six grandchildren: Berit Preston, James Preston (Ashley), Adrianne Everson (Daniel Dorcey), Aubrey Kringen (Zachary Powers), Elise Everson and William Everson; three great grandchildren: Harper, Henry, and Charlotte, two step great grandchildren: Kaija and Dane, her brother-in-law, Don Everson, her beloved dog Misty, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial has been established in Charlyne's name for The Literacy Council of the Black Hills. You can donate online at https://www.literacycouncilblackhills.org/donate

"A memoir from a loving Grandchild:
Grandma received her BA Degree at age 57 and her MA age 64. That's incredible. Her Honorary Doctorate in Contrarianism was awarded posthumously at age 89 (summa cum laude in that, too). Grandma also made it past opening day 2024, March 28th, as a nod to Grandpa and his beloved Red Sox. She had a great sense of humor which was required for all of their moves. She raised her children on 5 different reservations across ND, SD and WA, largely the Rosebud, including experiencing the Wounded Knee uprising of 1973, while working at Rosebud Elementary. Grandma said "I love you" in her actions many times. She was a true champion for education and intensely independent. She was just a wonderful lady and darned good natured. Without her devotion to Grandpa (as one example cooking sodium deficient "super basic" meals), Deano would not have survived X, Y, Z and make it to age 80, much less 90. These are just some thoughts on capturing a sliver of her totality acknowledging it's so difficult to do/near impossible in so few words. Rest in Peace, Grandma. Thank You and Love You, J"
