Obituary

Today, we gather to celebrate the life of Cheryl Henrietta Holvig, a woman whose strength, love, and generosity inspired countless hearts.  Born on August 26th, 1944, in Timberlake, South Dakota, Dewey County, to Catherine Amelia Livermont and Floyd Willis Wilcox, Cherie left an indelible mark on our lives.

As a proud 6th generation enrolled tribal member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, Cherie's heritage and cultural roots were a vital part of her identity.  Her connection to her community and ancestors was a source of strength and inspiration throughout her life.

Cherie is survived by her loving family, including her daughter, Shellie Kay Stubsten; her grandchildren, Kayla Sue Holvig and Dalton Stuart Holvig; her great-grandchildren, Owyn Reed McCoy, Weston Laine Holvig, and Wyatt Claire Holvig; and her siblings, Gloria Brown, Patty Phillips, Ron Wilcox, and Jr Wilcox. She was also blessed with a special relationship with Dayna Willcuts, her daughter's childhood friend, who became like a second daughter to her.  She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Roger Lloyd Holvig; her only son, Chad Stuart Holvig; her parents; two sisters, Jackie Hoffman and Rochelle Oakland; and one brother, Les Wilcox.

To those who knew her, Cherie was a constant source of love, support, and guidance. Her unwavering dedication to her family was a testament to her unshakeable commitment to those she loved. On occasion, she'd walk her two grandchildren to school, savoring the moments spent with them and ensuring they started their day with a sense of security and love. Her presence was a comforting reminder that she was always there to care for and protect those around her.

Cherie's warm hugs were legendary, offering a sense of safety and comfort that was hard to find elsewhere. Her love was a sanctuary, a place where worries and fears could be left behind, and where the beauty of life could be cherished.

Beyond her family, Cherie's impact was felt by countless others.  As a successful businesswoman, she owned and operated Needles and Pins, a testament to her entrepreneurial spirit and creativity.  Her exceptional seamstress skills earned her a loyal client base, with a waiting list that spoke to her remarkable talent.  Yet, no matter how busy she was, Cherie always made time for others, dropping everything to chat with a friend, family member, or even a stranger, giving each person her undivided attention.

Cherie's passions were a testament to her vibrant spirit.  Her garden was her sanctuary, where she'd tend to her beloved flowers, nurture the green grass, and bask in the beauty of nature.  She'd often be found with a cigarette in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other, savoring the simple pleasures.  A self-proclaimed news junkie, she'd spend hours watching C-SPAN and MSNBC, always engaged and informed. And when she wasn't outdoors or staying current on politics, you might find her cheering on her beloved Arizona Cardinals or playing nickel keno for hours on end.

While Cherie's passing leaves a void in our lives, her legacy remains.  We remember her strength, her love, and her generosity.  We honor her memory by continuing to live with the values she instilled in us.

As we say goodbye, we'll cherish the memories of her love, her laughter, and her unwavering commitment to those around her.  Rest in peace, Cherie. Your love will continue to bloom in our hearts, just like the flowers in your garden.
