RAPID CITY- Chester K. Mantei, 74, Rapid City, died Thursday, September 22, 2011 at Golden Living Center- Black Hills. Chester K. Mantei was born October 5, 1936 in Fortuna, ND to Robert and Mabel (Wilkinson) Mantei. He left home at an early age to find work. He married Myrna Erickson in June of 1956 in Froid, Montana. They just celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in June. He was most proud of being self-employed and was known for being a hard worker. Chester was one of the founding fathers of the Box Elder Fire Department where he at one time held the title of Fire Chief. He also worked as law enforcement for a few years and water superintendent in the late 60s. He was very active in the Box Elder community where he worked for 35 years. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Myrna Mantei, Rapid city; son, Gary (Tammy) Mantei, Missoula, MT; three daughters, Karla (Seth) Brewer, Waxhaw, NC; Karen (Scott) Goldade, Sturgis; Karol (Don)Moser, Deer Park, WA; two brothers, Victor (Rachel)Mantei, Rapid City; David (Dianne) Mantei, Boerne, TX; sister, Alice Halvorson, Starbuck, MN; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Norman & Deward; one sister, Ione Mosser; and three grandchildren. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 30 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with Rev. Herb B. Cleveland officiating.
