Obituary

Claude Gross, 96 of Rapid City passed away Sunday July 7, 2024

He was born September 27, 1927 near Hague, ND on the family's homestead to Carl Gross and Barbara (Heilman) Gross. He grew up on the farm with 11 siblings. He took care of all the tractors and old Model Ts on the farm. He told stories of using horses to plow the fields, his father leaving to get coal, only to be caught in a storm. To survive his mother tore down the rafters in the chicken coup to burn. They did not have electricity until early 1950's. He rode horses up until his 20s when he was bucked off for the very last time and swore, he would never ride again. He also had many fun endeavors with his brothers, especially Ambrose and Joe, who he was close in age. He was also close to his older and younger siblings and although they lived far from him, their relationships were important and they kept in touch.

The life of a farmer is where Claude's mechanical abilities blossomed. He was resilient, he lived through many difficult times, but always persevered. When the computer became a household item, he embraced it and learned to use it.

Claude met the love of his life, Elizabeth (Wagner) Gross, in Strasburg, ND. He was seven years her senior. From this marriage seven children were born. He loved his family and to support them he traveled across the country working as a sheet metal worker being a member of the Local 10 Sheet Metal Workers Union for over 65 years. He could do just about anything, when something was needed, such as a family camper, he built it.

Claude's Catholic faith was very strong which included membership with the Knights of Columbus.

Although Claude never rode another horse, he did love riding in the Black Hills with his ATV, up into his 90's. Dad also liked to ride his mountain bike, and met many dear friends while walking the mall most mornings and swimming at the rec center. Eventually, his daily walks were at Menards. He also enjoyed supper at either Culvers, Pizza Ranch, or the Golden Coral. The employees were always so kind to Claude and made him feel welcome which brought him so much joy.

He lived a long and healthy life. He enjoyed an occasional cigar, beer or whiskey, and some fried food (although he would never admit it). He became active in being a Relive distributor.

He is survived by his children; Simon (Kay) Gross, Diane (John) Bates, Allen (Valerie) Gross, Brenda (Mark) Behrends, Lisa (Charles) Fleming, Randy Gross, 17 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and son-in-law Frank Russette.

He is preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth, daughter Rebecca, his parents, four brothers, and one sister.

Dad, you left the legacy of strength, hard work ethic, being kind to others, more importantly the love of family and friends. You were always there for us, no matter what and loved each of us for who we were. We will miss you dearly.
