RAPID CITYConstance Louette Connie' (Tierney) Hicks, 77, of Rapid City, died at Fountain Springs Healthcare on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, after a battle with Alzheimer's. She was born on July 2, 1936, in Bucksport, Maine, to Elwood and Ora (Soper) Tierney. She attended Brewer, Maine schools, where she played to tuba in the band and varsity basketball. She also enjoyed playing softball and bowling for many years.She was an avid New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics fan. She enjoyed watching any kind of sports. On December 15, 1955, she married Melvin Hicks from Martin, South Dakota, in Plattsburg, New York. They had two sons, Scott and Glen. Due to Mel's Air Force career of 25 years, they lived in numerous different states. After Mel's retirement from the Air Force, they returned to South Dakota to live. Connie worked as a "lunch lady" at her sons' childhood schools and spent several years working at JC Penneys until she retired. Connie was preceded in death by her parents, her step-father Arthur Murray, her husband Mel Hicks in 2005; her step-brothers, Donald Murray; brothers-in-law, Dale Hicks, Neil Hicks, Leonard Hicks, Quincy Louden, Nathaniel Hicks and John Hicks; sisters-in-law, Lynna Hicks, Ethel Louden, Edith Hicks and Amber Hicks; mother-in-law Julia Hicks and father-in-law, Asa Hicks. Connie is survived her son, Scott (Susan) Hicks, of Bangor, Maine, and their children, Nathan and Erika; her son Glen (Annette) Hicks, of Merrimack, New Hampshire and their children Kari and Jordan; a special niece, Leona (Hal) Oberlander, of New Underwood, South Dakota, and their children, Tyler, Keil, Aaron, Justin, and Sierra; her step-sister, Bea (Richard) Zimmerman, of Daytona Beach, Fla. and their family; a brother-in-law, Bud Hicks, of Martin, South Dakota and his family; sisters-in-law, Doris Hicks, of Martin, South Dakota and her family, Luella Hicks, of Buffalo Gap, South Dakota and her family and Janet Belle Hicks, of Winner, South Dakota and her family. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 20, at Canyon Lake United Methodist Church with the Rev. Eric Grinager officiating. A luncheon will follow the service in the parish hall. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m.
