RAPID CITY- D. Catherine (Funk) Griffin, 93, died Sunday, April 20, 2014 at Golden Living Center Prairie Hills. Catherine was born to Martin W. Funk and Eunice Mary (Nixon) Funk on February 24, 1921 at Edgewood, IA. Her early childhood was spent in Iowa until the age of eight when the family moved to Lemmon, South Dakota. She attended rural and consolidated schools where her father taught until entering Cathedral High School in Rapid City in 1934. After receiving a teaching degree at Black Hills State College, she had a varied career teaching all eight grades in a country school, working at the Ordinance Depot at Provo, SD, teaching in Elgin, IL, following which she was employed by the Rapid City Public School System first as a classroom teacher and then a librarian until her early retirement in 1983. She received a Master's Degree in Library Science from Brigham Young University at Provo, UT in 1972. Catherine was active in local, state, and national education organizations serving on many committees and holding numerous offices. She was also a member of the local and state Retired Teachers Association, DAR, and Life Member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Catherine also acted as Grand Lady for the Knights Ladies from 1976-1978. She was a member of St. Therese, the Little Flower Catholic Church in Rapid City and a member of St. George Catholic Church in Apache Junction, AZ, during the winter months spent in AZ until 2004. Catherine married Leo P. Griffin in Rapid City, SD on January 23, 1951. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and one sister. As avid square dancers, she and Leo belonged to several square dance clubs and they danced everywhere they traveled throughout the country and made life-long friends along the way. She particularly enjoyed touring overseas. Survivors include her husband, Leo, Rapid City; son, Mark (Norma) Griffin, Chandler, AZ; daughter, Maureen (James) Millim, Rapid City; three grandchildren, Christopher (Karen) Millim, Caryn (Scott) Carlson, Rapid City; and Peter Griffin, Chandler, AZ; and four great grandchildren. A memorial has been established to St. Therese Church. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. A Christian Wake Service with a rosary will follow at 7:00 p.m. Christian Funeral Mass will be offered at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, April 24, at St. Therese Catholic Church, 532 Adams St. with Rev. Bill Zandri presiding. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Rapid City.
