RAPID CITY -- Dale M. Smith, 86, Rapid City, died Saturday, June 12, 2010, at a local nursing home. He was born Feb. 15, 1924, in Forest City, the son of William and Margaret (Seavers) Smith. He lived in the Black Hills area and attended school in Deadwood. Dale married Rozella I. Simmons on May 29, 1954, in Sturgis. The couple resided in Deadwood following their marriage, moving to Rapid City in December of 1954. He served in Civilian Conservation Corps from July 17, 1940 to May 18, 1942, then in the U.S. Army from June 3, 1943 to Jan. 31, 1946, and served in France and Germany. He was employed with Black Hills Power and Light for 38 years, retiring in 1986. He was life member of Rushmore VFW Post 1273. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Lovelett, Cheyenne, Wyo., and Karen Athans and her husband Frederick Jr., Hill City; three granddaughters, Jennifer Lee (Josh), Crystal Wiest and Michelle Kolodji, all of Rapid City; two brothers, including his twin, Donald Smith, and younger brother, Fred Smith, both of Rapid City; and one sister-in-law, Donna DeGolier, Austin, Minn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rozella; his parents; one brother; six sisters; and one granddaughter. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, at First Presbyterian Church in Rapid City with the Rev. Bob Evans officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors by TREA Honor Guard.
