Obituary

Daniel Peter Landguth was born May 9, 1946 in Deadwood, SD to Ben and Clara (Rosencranz) Landguth. Dan left the Black Hills on January 11, 2009 after a courageous, 4 month battle with brain cancer. He was a humble, generous, and thoughtful man of great integrity who was always a true gentleman. We will miss him more than words can convey. Dan graduated from Lead High School in 1964. It was in Lead that he met the love of his life, Barbara Sankey, and married her on April 17, 1965. Its hard to remember a time when Dan and Barb walked together and werent holding hands. Their life together was a true, love story. Dan deeply loved his Barbie as she cared for him to the very end. Together they raised 4 children. Dan graduated from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1968 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked for PG&E in California before returning to Rapid City in 1969 where he began his 35 year career with Black Hills Power and Light starting as a Power Use Engineer. Dan retired from Black Hills Corp in 2005 as Chairman, President, and CEO. Dan loved life to its fullest. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and was always planning for an adventure that may have been as simple as making a birdhouse with a friend, fishing on the Big Horn River or going on a memorable trip with Barb and friends. Every day mattered and everyone mattered to him. His children and grandchildren loved to hear him tell stories about his many highjinks while growing up in Lead, SD in the 50s and 60s. The laughter from his family when he told of how at a very young age, he and his twin, Denny, would catch wild chipmunks, train one to do tricks and then sell the wild ones to tourists never dulled over time. A very community and civic minded man, Dan lent his knowledge and leadership expertise to many organizations over the years. Dan loved his wife, his family, the beautiful Black Hills and especially Spearfish Canyon, fly fishing, his dogs and Black Hills Corp, not necessarily in that order depending if the hatch was on. Dan is survived by his loving wife Barb Landguth, his daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Dennis Turner and their children Quentin, Chaz and Garrett, (Columbus, OH) his son and daughter-in law Mark and Carlene Landguth and their children Kale, Quin and Shey, his son and daughter-in-law Scott and Jennifer Landguth and their children Taylor, Hailey and Hanna, (both of Rapid City) and his daughter Erin Landguth (Missoula, MT). He is also survived by his best fishing buddy, his twin Denny and Susan Landguth (Rapid City) and his brother Charles and Bev Landguth.(Knoxville, TN) Dan was preceded in death by his father, Ben Landguth, his mother and stepfather Clara Landguth-Freier and Carson Freier. A memorial has been established for the Black Hills Flyfishers. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday Jan 17 at Blessed Sacrament Church, with the Rev. William Zandri presiding. A celebration of Dans life will follow immediately at The Canyon Lake Resort.
