Obituary

RAPID CITY, David Lee Gillespie, 77, passed away Friday, April 14, 2017 at home.

David was born June 4, 1939, to Lee and Elizabeth Crumrine Gillespie on their farm outside Wolbach, NE.

David grew up attending schools at District 37 outside Wolbach, Farwell Public School. He graduated from Waverly High School, Waverly, NE, in 1956. During high school, he enjoyed playing baseball, basketball and football. Upon graduation, he resided and worked with the Harold and Helen McGill family on their farm. He joined the US Air force in 1957. In 1960, he married the love of his life, Vicky Parish. Their union lasted for over 56 years! Together they had four grateful children.

David served in the US Air Force for 24 years, retiring in 1981 as a Senior Master Sergeant. He was stationed at several bases to include Wichita Falls, TX, Westover, MA, Guam, Omaha, NE, and finally retiring at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, SD.

David had no fear. He was a speed and adrenalin junkie! He spent many years riding in the rodeo and driving racecars. He not only drove but worked as crew chief on multiple pit crews. His racing family remained near and dear to him throughout his life. He also had a pilot's license and enjoyed flying private planes. Hunting and fishing were always a major part of his life. He enjoyed camping at Angostura and boating with his family and friends. He was a lifelong Nebraska Cornhusker football fan!

David loved being a grandfather. He spent many hours supporting his grandchildren at Taekwondo, softball, baseball, volleyball, football, soccer, plays, concerts, and any event they were in! Besides his grandchildren, he took great pride in and had unconditional love for his many Dachshunds; most recently, Turbo and Grizz!

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Karen [Langston] Brubaker, and his nieces Dawn and Amanda.

David is survived by: his wife, Vicky; one son, Patrick (Robin) Gillespie; three daughters; Pam (Todd) Willis, Michele (Jeremy) Olson, and Nichole Gillespie, all of Rapid City; brother, Darrell (Sue) Gillespie, Absarokee, MT; two sisters; Judith Lawson, Lincoln, NE, and Shirley (John) Moore, Hickman, NE; eight grandchildren; Amber (Pat) Staedtler, Alesha and Joshua Gillespie, Casey Willis, Zackary Gillespie, Alivia and Jetzon Olson, Westley Gillespie, and many nieces and nephews.
