Obituary

RAPID CITY- David Don Laudenschlager, 64, died at Rapid City Regional Hospital on Thursday, December 2, 2010. David was born in Minot, ND to Don and Ardith Laudenschlager. He attended school in both Minot, ND and Billings MT. David Graduated from Billings West High in 1964 and from Rocky Mountain College in 1968 where he received a BA in History and French. He then went on to Lutheran Seminary from 1968 to 1972. David married Janet Van Dyke in 1969 and they moved to Rapid City in the fall of 1972. David taught for the Rapid City School District from 1973 until 2010. While at Central High School he taught American Indian History and Culture, Indian Policy, South Dakota History, World Civilizations, Geography, A.P. History, Economics, CAPS, American History, Civics and U.S. Government. In 1996 he received a Masters Degree in Education from the University of South Dakota . He was an adjunct instructor for Black Hills State University, Augustana College, Northern State University, South Dakota School of Mines, and Oglala Lakota College. David served on many different boards: the South Dakota Social Studies Council, Leland Case Library Board, Mid-America Research coalition for the Homeless, North Central Evaluation Steering Committee, and the South Dakota Board for the Humanities. He was also the President of the West River History Conference Board from 2002-2009 and the Site coordinator for the South Dakota Supreme Courts 1997 visit to Rapid City. David received many honors throughout his life. He was the Rapid City Jaycees Outstanding Young Educator of the Year in 1975. He also received the Dakota History Conference Award in 1984. He was the High School Social Studies Teacher of the Year from 1978-1979, the South Dakota Council of Social Studies High School Teacher of the Year from 1982-1983, and South Dakota History Teacher of the Year in 1999 (Governors award). Some of Davids publications included articles in: South Dakota History (1979), The Black Hills Monthly Magazine (1981), North Dakota Geographers Bulletin (1983) The Dakota History Conference Collections (1977-1988), and West River History Conference Collections (1993-1998). In 2001- 2006 he authored three scripts for the South Dakotan History Project for Public Television: The South Dakota Series. He researched and wrote a twelve part T.V. series for South Dakota Public Television titled By the People for the People (1991-1993). He was also publicized in a history and geography text and curriculum published by the Graphic Learning Corporation, Tallahassee FL. David loved book collecting, book restoration, writing, collecting stamps, guns, going to flea markets, and all of history in general. Survivors include his mother Ardith Laudenschlager; his wife, Janet Laudenschlager; his son Dr. Mark Laudenschlager and wife Dr. Christi Leach; his daughter Mary Baker and husband Rev. Luke Baker; and his two grandchildren Joshua Alan and Jonas David Baker. All of whom he loved very much. He was preceded in death by his Father Don Laudenschlager who is with him today in heaven. Visitation will be at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home on Sunday, December. 5th from 5-7pm. Services will be on Monday, December 6, at 10:30 at Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. David Lindenberg officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Cemetery. A memorial has been established at Peace Lutheran Church.
