Obituary

Dean H. Goodrich,80, of Black Hawk, S.D. passed away peacefully at Rapid City Regional Hospital on Thursday, May 8th, 2015. Dean was born December 20th, 1934 in Newburg, Iowa to Roy and Margaret Goodrich. He attended school in Newburg and Kellogg, Iowa and graduated high school at Kellogg High School in 1954. Dean often said that the only reason he stayed in school was his love for sports. In high school he played football, basketball, and baseball. Baseball was his favorite sport and while playing semi-pro baseball he pitched 2 no-hitter games, one of which was with Pink eye. He also went on to try out for the Chicago Cubs and met Dizzy Dean. Dean married his best friend and high school sweetheart Verlee Williams on February 14th, 1956 in Kellogg, Iowa. They lived in Kellogg for a short time where Dean worked for Maytag Appliance factory in Newton, Iowa. In 1958, Dean joined the United States Air Force where he mastered fighter jet electronics and was stationed at Ellsworth Air force Base near Rapid City. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force on November 9th, 1960 and was hired the same day by Black Hills Power and Light Company in Rapid City. He worked in the meter lab and eventually became the meter lab foreman, retiring in 1994 after 34 years. Dean loved baseball and coached the Rushmore Little League Blockers for 15 years. His favorite hobby was woodworking. After living in a small house on Meade St. in Rapid City for 30 years, Dean and his wife Verlee bought 20 acres near Black Hawk in 1987 where they built their dream home, workshop, volleyball court and more. He was an excellent craftsman, building his home, much of the furniture in the new home, and countless gifts for family and friends. Dean lost his first wife of 45 years to cancer in 2003. On August 4th, 2007, Dean married Marcia Ebert and they continued to live in Black Hawk. Over the next 7 years Dean and Marcia traveled the world extensively, going to Australia, Hawaii, Alaska, Russia, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Mexico, Canada, and more. Dean loved the Lord. He was a member of First Christian Church in Rapid City for nearly 55 years. He served on the board and was involved in many church projects over the years. He always had an excellent attitude and great work ethic and always said "If you're going to do something, do it right or don't do it at all". There was never and "gray" area with Dean. He was always "black and white". He will be most remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was loyal, committed, and selfless. He was deeply loved by many and will greatly missed. Dean is survived by his wife Marcia, sons Mark (Teresa) Goodrich of Spearfish, S.D. Steve (Lori) Goodrich, Longmont, Co, grandchildren Tyler (Shelley) Goodrich, Whitewood, S.D., Casey (Ashley) Goodrich, Spearfish, S.D., Deena Goodrich, Spearfish, S.D., Christopher(Laura) Goodrich, St. Joseph, M.O., Corina Goodrich, Longmont, Co, great grandchildren Gracie, Ainsley, Hayden and Liam.
