His parents and older brother, Dave (departed in 2016), moved to Rapid City, SD, where both boys spent their childhood. As a young boy, Dean's first job was delivering the local Rapid City Journal newspaper. During his mid-late teens, he worked at Home Craft Bakery and Casino Bar. In 1966, Dean graduated from Rapid City High School. Then briefly relocating to Black Foot, ID, he worked the potato fields before joining the military.

Training was held at the Oahe Dam Reservoir, with further training on the Alaskan glaciers.
