Obituary

RAPID CITY - On Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Debbie Ray Brand, 58, left this world to be with our Lord in Heaven. Debbie was born in Rapid City to Lucy and Raymond Lucan. She married her childhood sweetheart, Verdell, in 1977 and devoted 33 years of her life to him. They had two beautiful daughters, Lindi and Megan, and four grandchildren that were her everything. Debbie was a professional pianist and chose to share her amazing gift with the world. She took her talent and taught it to her students and played around town for so many others to hear and enjoy. She was a fabulous poet and artist and a member of the Haycamp Wood Carvers Club. She battled the devastating disease, MS, for many years but she never let that hinder her ability to be the most courageous, beautiful, kind, loving, strong spirited person you have ever met. Her personality shined through to all of us and lifted us up. We are all so absolutely blessed to have been a part of her life. She always said, "God does not promise a comfortable journey, only a safe landing." Her journey here on earth was not the most comfortable one as she said, but thanks to all of her family and friends, we were able to help give her the strength she needed to continue moving forward. This world is a more beautiful place because of her and she will be unbearably missed by all. Debbie leaves behind her loving husband, Verdell; her beautiful daughters, Lindi Koepp (Dustin) and Megan Cotter (Brandon) and all her grandbabies, Trace, Macey, Shayne, and Graylin; her brother-in-law, Dave Hirchert (Peg); mother-in-law, Bonnie Miller; and a very large extended family. Preceding her in death were her parents, Raymond and Lucy Lucan; sister, Norma Lee Hirchert; and nephew Rodney Hirchert. A service in celebration of Debbie's life will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, at South Park United Church of Christ, 2201 Third Street, with the Rev. Bruce Herrboldt officiating. A memorial has been established for the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation in memory of Debbie Brand, in hopes of saving another person from having to suffer and to help all the ones that are suffering. www.nationalmssociety.org
