RAPID CITY- Deloris Rae Zapp passed away on January 6, 2014 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was born October 21, 1930 in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Ben and Nettie McKeague. Deloris' family moved to Rapid City in the early 40's. She graduated from Rapid City High School in 1948, where one of her favorite activities was as a member of the chorus. She passed on her love of music to all three of her children. The many years of piano lessons, band and music lessons, attending concerts, plus her devoted hours of support, instilled a similar love of music in her children, which they view as one of the most precious gifts they received from their mother. Deloris began her career at the Oldsmobile dealership in Rapid as a bookkeeper - putting her exceptional math skills to good use. It was here that she met her husband, James (Jim) Zapp. In time Deloris went to work at the Chevrolet dealership and became the office manager. Her last 25-plus years working were at the Brekhus Buick Honda dealership. She had an enviable reputation for her knowledge, attention to detail, and accuracy in her work. Deloris was a great asset to her employers who valued her precision with their financial records. In fact she earned numerous awards from Honda (including national recognition), Buick, and Chevrolet for her exceptional work. An avid life-long Yankees baseball fan, Deloris inherited this passion from her father - Ben McKeague. And in 1989 she had the thrill of watching the Yankees play in Yankee Stadium in New York. The spectators around her were impressed by her in-depth knowledge of the team and all its players, managers, and history. She could spout off facts with the best of them. And they found it fascinating that a lady from South Dakota was such a Yankee fan. In addition to spending time with family, crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles were among her other interests. Deloris also liked a bit of adventure and enjoyed the occasional trip to places around the USA and Canada with family. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Jim Zapp of Rapid City; son Michael Zapp of Sheridan, WY; daughter Debra Bienert and husband Clifford Bienert of Rapid City; and daughter Karen Zapp and husband John Withers of Leonardtown, MD. Deloris is also survived by four grandchildren: Carl (Jessica), Ben (Stephanie) and Rachel Bienert; and Jacob Zapp. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Marlys, Grace and Beverly. Visitation is on Friday, January 10, from 5-7 pm, at the Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. The service is on Saturday, January 11, at 1:30 pm at the funeral home with Father Michel Mulloy officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a memorial that has been established for the benefit of enhancements and upgrades for McKeague Baseball Field in care of the Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, 2700 Jackson Blvd, Rapid City, SD 57702.
