Diane J. Gray, age 67, of Black Hawk, passed away on March 4, 2017 at Rapid City Regional Hospital surrounded by her family.

Diane (Schmautz) Gray was born on April 13, 1949 in Elgin, North Dakota, to Rueben and Edna Schmautz. She resided in the Hebron, North Dakota area with her family until 1956 when they moved to Lead.  Diane graduated from Lead High School in 1967.

Diane married Harley Gray on November 18, 1967. They were blessed with two children, a daughter, Lisa, in 1969 and a son, Rodney in 1973.  They resided at Ellsworth Air Force Base until Harley's discharge from the Air Force at which time, they settled in Lead, where they would live until 2000.  While living in Lead, Diane worked for Twin City Fruit and Queen City Medical Center.  In 2000, Harley and Diane moved to Black Hawk and Diane began working for US Foodservice where she would be employed until her retirement in 2014.

In her spare time, Diane enjoyed cooking, baking and doing crafts, especially crocheting and making jewelry. She was praised continually by her grandchildren for the pumpkin bars she made and on occasion, they would request Grandma's pumpkin bars instead of cakes on their birthdays.  Most of Diane's family members have at least one beautiful crocheted item or piece of jewelry that she made.  However, her greatest joy was simply spending time with her family members.

Grateful for having shared Diane's life are the family members she leaves behind: her daughter, Lisa (Jim) Maciejewski of Summerset; her son, Rodney (Terri) Gray of Summerset; 4 grandchildren, Alex (Jordan) Feterl, Dylan Johnson, Jessie Gray and Jake Gray; a great-grandson, Trevor Feterl; one brother, Gerald (Shirley) Schmautz of Harrold; 2 sisters, Renee (Larry) Chitwood of Sioux Falls and Nancy (Kurt) Klunder of Black Hawk as well as countless in-laws, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Harley Gray on December 10, 2016.

A visitation will be held from 5:00pm until 7:00pm on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Services will be held at 10:00am on Thursday, March 9 at Grace United Methodist Church in Piedmont with Pastor Karl Kroger officiating. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.
